Say I want to divide or multiply rather than just add or subtract the numerical value of a variable? Would it be something like *= or /=? Also, if you have something that subtracts from a variable...

Hmm it is hard to say. There are things that I like about both of them. The second one is more details and has a higher contrast, but the first I think suits the cutsey style better. I will say that I do not like how the hair turned out in the second one; it looks more saturated than shaded.
