Re: Indie game pricing rambles
I wouldn't pay anything close to $50 for a book, and many books have better writing than any visual novel I have seen. I wouldn't pay anything close to $50 for an animated movie, and many animated movies have higher production values than any animated visual novel I have seen. If a book or visual no...

Re: Created Works in Progress - Otome
But because PyTom has recognized that GxB threads do have different posting tendencies, and he has decided NOT to nuke the forum as a result of him not finding BxG easily, I should be grateful that he has decided to let GxB developers/players support each other in their individual way. These postin...

Re: Created Works in Progress - Otome
(2) Wintermoon was right - and if my goal was to "segregate" games, this would be horrible. The division is not "games I care about" versus "games I don't", it's something that's more to deal with the level of traffic on WiP. Some games in GxB will be quite enjoyable t...

Re: Created Works in Progress - GxB
I have to admit, I've been treating Otome and GxB as synonyms. If people want to propose a way of tweaking that definition a bit, I'm open to it. Or perhaps the forum should be changed to WiP - GxB, rather than straight up Otome - since that might imply less. Otome is a fairly useful classification...

Re: PLEASE SOMEONE HELP
Gif animations are not supported in Ren'Py (or weren't the last time I checked), and png significant advantages over gif, the big ones being more colors and a full alpha channel (i.e. variable transparency).

Re: Created Works in Progress - Otome
Two of my games that were moved to the otome forum are exactly your definition. They were INCIDENTAL ROMANCE. But because of the attitude against GxB, no one cared to look past that tag and moved it. THAT IS A PROBLEM. A lot of games are classified wrong, no question about that. [gxb] and otome are...

Re: Created Works in Progress - Otome
I'm well aware there are other genres in the "non-otome" category, but there used to be two MAJOR categories: both sides in the heterosexual relationship. Really? I thought actual X-pursues-Y romance games were fairly rare. There are a lot of incidental BxG games that don't focus on roman...

Re: Created Works in Progress - Otome
FWIW I also think tags make more sense. The nice thing about tags is that you can have more than one of them, so that I can tag my (hypothetical! Or is it?) story about a war between a gay Roman general and a Lesbian Egyptian queen as [GxG, BxB, historical, war] and hit all of the main areas of inte...

Re: Art Dumpage! Show your art ^^
For the same reason I shouldn't try to make the music for my games, I believe you shouldn't be the artist. Does this come across as incredibly insulting to anyone else? I have a lot respect for a bad artist who knows he/she is bad, but is willing to work on improving his/her skills, even to the poi...

Re: Downloadable Games are Important
As a gamer maker, the entire point of making games is so that they can be preserved. Money is pays the rent, but if money was my primary goal, I'd find another line of work. My games are the proof of my existence - when they are gone, there will be nothing left of me. Life? Fixed duration, rapidly a...

Re: Created Works in Progress - Otome
One more forum to avoid... This division is useful to two kinds of people: those who discriminate against otome games, and those who discriminate against everything else. I'm sure there are plenty of people in both of these groups, but I also feel that this behavior should not be officially endorsed...

Re: In what form do you write?
I always write directly into my game scripts. When I can't (or don't want to) code something yet, I leave a comment as a placeholder. Words that aren't in a game engine don't feel "real" to me. I like to be able to see how my words look in the actual game.

Re: Voice Acting in VN games
You may also not need to voice every line for the major characters. You can probably get away with just recording voices for major scenes. I would advice against that. If you can't afford to voice all lines from a character, it's probably better not to voice that character at all than to be inconsi...

Re: Voice Acting in VN games
Typically all of the main characters except the protagonist are voiced, but it varies a lot. I can think of several cases where the protagonist is voiced, and in at least one case (Hourglass of Summer) even the narration is voiced. Minor characters are often voiced in the more high-end titles. Some...
