I am trying to learn Japanese I would like some real world practice.

Do you guys know of any easy reading Visual Novels in Japanese?
criteria:
- low reading level (I mean really low!)
- PC/MAC/Linux based
- no more than $30 US (Unless it is SUPER AWESOME!)

I would also be interested in slice of life web comics.

Susan

It's not out yet, but MangaGamer is releasing Go! Go! Nippon this month. It's supposedly an all-ages game, despite the undressing going on. O_o They made it specifically to teach foreigners about Japan, so that's cool.

From the screenshot, it looks like the text will be Japanese and English, which makes it pretty perfect for anyone who wants to study.

Yes, that is all ages, technically, as there is no sexual content in the game. It's not meant for children, by any means, but it has as much fanservice as you would expect from a TV-14 show... which most kids watch anyway, I know kids under 12 who watch adult swim and soap operas daily. Besides, she is covered just enough to be shown in an under 18 game legally. Their all ages section is simply a "no sex" section.

But I second that game. I will be getting it myself because not only is it cheap, but it was MADE for a Western English speaking audience, so I want to see how good it is. Looks interesting to me.

The Galaxy Angel series is quite a good choice for beginning Japanese learners. Generally, the vocabulary isn't that complex, there's not much text (compared to other visual novels), and the whole game consists of just dialogue. However, I have no idea how to get it outside of Japan. @_@

Not to split hairs, but being naked in this context is pretty much "sexual content." It's a "suggestive theme" at least. And saying it's not meant for children, along with comparisons to things that have age restrictions (14+), means it's not for all ages. ESRB says things 10+ is "everyone." Anyway ... It does look like a good game to teach Japanese. =P Just explaining my confusion with the term. If they only have 2 ratings, porn or "all ages", then I guess that explains it.

Yeah... most anime and eroge are aimed at a Japanese audience willing to pay higher prices. I have to get Go Go Nippon because from an academic / research perspective I want to see how much content they can pack into 9.95 Euros aimed at cheapo gaijins. I haven't been able to finish any VN recently at all (with the exception of Quartett, but that's because it was short) since I'm averse to spending 30+ hours on anything that isn't an RPG. So I'm going to be looking at this as a model for a commercial downsized VN will be: something a doujin-sized circle can create that won't take many years.

You'd think that they would have made a game about teaching foreigners about Japan more... ah, gender neutral.
Anyway, I'm kind of interested in this topic, mostly to see if I could find some games that have 'easy' japanese if I had to get an original copy. Not that I have much time for games at the moment -.-'
