Er... while browsing the net about "I want to be a pirate!"--(Apparently, I've been playing okashi na shima no peter pan lately and is playing James Hook's route now...) I bumped to this rather out of topic from what I'm looking for, but this quite picked my interest.
http://ploum.net/post/im-a-pirate
So apparently, the author claims he is a pirate because he bails nothing by being a righteous buyer. He had said some stuff I can relate to---but not to the point that I'd be pirating myself. I mean, unlike him, I buy/support otome games(the only thing I bother buying anyway, besides b's log and a few other games and mangas/magazines etc.) and their developers so that they'd produce more games, something maybe that everyone who is like me can relate to. What I found funny in this post is that he said no one will miss copyright industry, I mean, if copyright stuff are gone; I bet on the name of my grandpa no one will even bother making anything.

So what do you think about the post?
Ahem, so I just thought of sharing it here. :'D I don't know if this will be locked or anything but still posted this.

Pretty damn easily. That "knowledge" doesn't come out of nowhere. That hard work isn't something just magically appears. It's there because someone invested their time, energy, money, and creativity into that product. Trying to tell yourself that what you are doing isn't little more than theft is self-delusional.

He's addressing big media conglomerates, not indies. He said that he does support small artists.
I remember an indie developer once confiding in me that he only needed about 5000 people to support him financially to continue to keep on doing what he likes, creating art, and sustaining a living. There is no need to get 100,000 sales, which the App pricing scheme seems to dictate must be minimum. (And then Apple pulls a Free App for the Day stunt without notifying the devs and all of a sudden their inbox is flooded with hundreds of support requests, while they get NOTHING for their trouble.)
Indies are not as greedy as rapstars who spout bullshit and rake in millions to buy their Bentleys... in fact I've seen plenty of more talented people in the indie scene.

I used to want to make freeware indefinitely, until I noticed it was cutting into my time that I use to file my taxes, run errands, and spend time with my family on top of a day job. And you can't expect people whose families depend on them to take time off to stress over creating free entertainment for people who don't have money but have plenty of time instead. And for those who have experienced what it's like to be an employer, it feels good (most of the time). I mean instead of getting a luxury car, you provide jobs for a few people. And you can't employ people if there is no economy or no market to speak of. The comics crash didn't happen in the US, it happened in my country as well -- even with print, people were too cheap and just photocopied or lent their comics during their heyday up until the eighties. Now nobody makes local comics -- all the artists became subcontractors for the likes of Marvel, who DO enforce their rights.

I understand where the guy is coming from for music. Why should he pay a company $10, $15, $20+ for a CD which actually has very poor sound quality, he can't put it on his own personal MP3 players without illegal bypass ripping software, and he can't find the level of music he was able to 15 years ago much less pay the original artist for it. I can certainly relate. It is maddening that I should need to pay at least $10 extra to get a Japanese or European copy of a CD just so I can get studio quality sound. A lot of music customers (especially the ones who pay) actually do have high quality headphones designed to get the beautiful nuances that the artist has put in. Why destroy that to the point that you can't hear it? It's like making a high quality art piece, blurring it, and selling people the print. It's not as the original artist intended and I don't understand it. You're almost not giving people a proper choice when a good quality version is out there for free, especially for songs where the original isn't even available for sale anywhere outside of $150 on ebay.

It's not about paying the original artist. He laments for them and as do I. It's the record companies who believe that they can get away with selling a sub-par product as if nobody can tell the difference. I don't agree with most issues he brings up, but I do agree about the restrictions. I don't like the way the music industry is heading at all. My father used to always say to me that our technology is outgrowing our morals by leaps and bounds and I think he's right. The technology is changing industry so quickly that there's no time to compensate and to do things properly. It's hard to create and enforce a system which will actually make all people happy, even the majority of people happy. Even with all the laws that congress is attempting to pass, it would be impossible to stop people from bypassing them. I think the only way that artists are going to get proper compensation for their work is if they either go out on their own selling through themselves (which is really damn difficult) or the industry goes through a massive change and actually listens to what their potential customers want.

On that note, why is the rum always gone?

EDIT: Oh, and I just want to state that I think that his using a personal crusade as an excuse to steal is absolutely BS. That's not the reason why he doesn't pay, that's just the righteous excuse he uses to make himself "have a peaceful sleep."

Yes basically that. Most pirates know that what are doing is wrong so they come up with insane BS to "convince themselves" (and not the others) that they're doing nothing bad. I've seen this many times, but the fact is rather simple, if you like something you need to support the creators. Otherwise don't complain if you don't see anymore commercial BxG games...
