If someone really wants to make something cool, please please PLEEAASE make a free engine that can easily create JRPG-style VNs like Eternal Will's games: http://youtu.be/awcgHudP8T4 with very little coding and lots of customization; or even an add-on to ren'py that could pull that off with easy coding... I would use the sh*t out of that engine. (but, it's probably an impossible dream...) Or, make a free video editing program that's specifically for VN ops (yet another impossible dream...)

Have you taken a look at nyaatrap's releases? He's almost doing that already. It's the fancy fighting effects that I'm more curious about, since there's a certain technique that can be achieved using a combination of images, movement, and dissolves. I'm pretty sure any of the skilled programmers here can do something similar. Heck, it looks like something even I can do, given the Battle Engine and plenty of time.

But I don't think people will want to program the game EXACTLY like in the video... battle systems are like the artwork... you want them as unique to the game as can possibly can. Standard RPGMaker logic will come off as off-the-shelf.

I only want to point out that making a RPG, even a JRPG, is an insane amount of work. Unless you are making something like plain VN + combats and done (no map, no multiple quests outcome, level up, items, equipment, factions, recruitable characters etc etc), the amount of content (both artwork, writing, music) and the amount of testing that has to be done (including tweaking / balancing the game) is really HUGE.
After I finish Loren and Planet Stronghold sequel I plan to take a LONG break from RPGs!!

Most of the VGFX I've seen on games are black images(or animated clips/whatever) with bright colors placed with an "add" (Photoshop's "linear dodge") attribute. I wonder if you could do something like that in Ren'Py...

Deji: doing that requires additive blending which is not (yet) supported by Ren'Py, but I remember pytom said could add it in future.

That's what I thought.

I hope he implements it soon, it'd be quite helpful for some... things I'm planning :)
For now, I guess cleverly done semi-transparent PNGs could work.
