My Guard [GxB] [Fantasy/Medieval] [Upd8 25/07]

#1 Post by Fungii »

Alternate title: Attempt To Make a VN That I Don't Forget/Lose Time For Take 4
I've gotten better at sticking to projects outside of VNs lately, so I'm taking a new shot for something that's even less ambitious than I had in mind before.

(If you have any tips on making sure a one man game happens pls throw them my way I need all the help I can get)

ANYWAY here's the important stuff:
Image
Plot Overview:
  • You are the heir to a small kingdom (or at the very least, your daddy is a rich man with a lot of land), and as such you have been appointed your own personal knight-guard. He was just entering training when you were born, and thus he's seen you grow every day. Because of this, he has become rather overbearing, and you're 20 years old, dammit! You don't need him watching over you all the time! His constant over protection is starting to get on your last nerve, but how you react when you finally reach your breaking point ends up being a crossroad in your destiny.
cenric_nervous.png
Dark King.png
Characters:
You! [Mariette Van Rosen]
  • You've been raised in your daddy's land all your life, but that doesn't mean you've been sitting around learning etiquette all day! While you can wine and dine with the best of them for the sake of appearances, your real passion is in military strategy, and fencing is your favorite past time. You're competent AND confident in your combat skills, which makes it even more annoying that your guard won't get off your back!
Your Guard [Cenric D'Aarts]
  • He's seen you grow from crib to crown, and luckily you're too young to remember his acne prone-teen days as a guard-in-training. God knows why your father chose him specifically rather than appoint any of the high profile knights to you, but the old man does have his eccentricities. Regardless, he's practically a second parent to you, though he tries to not lord his age over you, which often leads to an embarrassing 'down-with-the-kids' persona.
Luckily, your fathers odd decision to make him your personal bodyguard ended up proving the correct choice; he's one of the best knights around, and keeps you safe from any trouble. Like tripping over an unexpected step, for example.
The Dark King [Evil McScaryVillain]
  • Spoilers: The reason behind the disappearing heirs. The armour he wears is both the source of his power and the cause of his want for more of it. Using the magical abilities granted to him by the mystic armour, he has hypnotised not just most of his kingdom, but almost all of the heirs in neighbouring ones. The reason he hypnotises the children rather than the rulers themselves, he says is for subtlety. The reality is that his powers alone aren't enough to keep a strong control over people older than a certain point, which is also the reason he takes a special interest in you; something in you tells him you can amplify his already growing strength, but he needs you to submit willingly.

    Detailed Story (Spoilers Obv):
    • After you hit your tolerance limit on the overprotection, you'll have the choice to either continue grin and bearing it, or basically tell him to heck off for a while (you don't really have the power to fire him).
Shortly after this, there's a kidnapping attempt on you. Depending on if your guard is still around or not, he could fail or be successful. This would be the main point where the paths split off into Queen routes or Dark Queen routes.
If you kept him around, he will end up mildly wounded and you'll both start the course on solving the mystery of why you were attacked, and eventually going after the King yourself.
If you told him to go away, you end up kidnapped along with a whole chain of other heirs at the Dark Kings castle, and you're on your own to get yourself out of there.

Queen routes basically have you discovering that all the other heirs are missing too, or at least acting up, and going on a sort of solo-team quest with your guard to save them. This is where most of the cute fluffy moments occur.
Dark Queen routes have you potentially overthrowing the Dark King and taking his castle from him. What this means for you and your guard romance, however, is quite the 180.
Possible Endings, right now I'm looking at about 8, minus obligatory mini bad ends:
    • - Lost Queen Ending (Fail to defeat the Dark King)
      - Mourning Queen Ending (Defeat the King, but you lose Cenric) [2 variations, depending on if you were in an official relationship or not]
      - Pure Queen Ending (Defeat the Dark King, keep Cenric)
      - Bride Queen Ending (Defeat the Dark King, marry Cenric)
      - Dark Queen Ending (Take over the Dark Kings Castle)
      - Bitter Queen Ending (Take over the Dark Kings castle, lose Cenric)
      - Dark Bride Ending (Take over the Dark Kings castle, marry Cenric) [2 variations, one where it's a forced marriage and one where it's a bittersweet one]
      - Evil Queen Ending (Take over the Dark Kings Castle, get rid of Cenric yourself)
      - Slaughtered Queen Ending (Cenric gets rid of you[!??!?])
Hopefully this'll be a short-ish game, but I'm pretty much doing this entirely solo and right now planning has me looking at least 15 sprites, 25 CGs and god knows how many backgrounds (which are what I'm most worried about). After that I have to find someone to do music and a pretty GUI!

Keeping this in the ideas thread until I have the whole script done entirely so that I don't have to feel immense guilt if/when it falls through 8)

Any tips will be appreciated!

Development Progress:
Outline: 70% (Need to soothe out the endings for the Pure Queen routes, and smooth out the Dark Queen route in general)
Script: ?% (5k words)
Sprites: 1/?
BGs: 6/?
CGs: 1/?

Sounds like a solid set up to me. I like the variety of the endings. However, I've never done a solo project so I can't give you any advice there ^^;.

I can't tell if you intend to bring this up from the summary so if you are going to address this in the full game you can ignore this XD. But I think it'd be useful to expand on why the father chose Cenric as the MC's knight. Or give the father a big enough role that they players can get to see how he is and make it so they are more willing to accept a strange choice like that.

Also I agree that Cenric's sprite is very nice :>.

Oh don't worry, it will be explained/elaborated on the fathers choice. He plays a sort-of minor role (he can re-capture you when you attempt to investigate the missing heirs). Whether or not he'll get a talksprite is debatable, though.
The explanation miiight seem a little hand-wavey, but right now I'm leaning towards either "It's tradition to choose a guard for a newborn heir" and he made a bit of a whacky choice, or "A guard to the heir needs to be trained specifically for that purpose from day one!" and thus chooses a young guard because "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". Or maybe a combination of the two!

Thank you, I like to think I specialise in handsome dudes haha.

I just want to say that anyone feeding my love of ojisan romance has my eternal love and devotion. Good luck with your project and try not to get burned out!! Even a small one can become large the more love, time, effort, and so on you put into it ^^ Glad to see your art gracing these forums again.

I have to agree; this sounds solid and amazing so far (and omg, Cenric is an ojisan and a really handsome one too yes please I'm sold ////). All I can really say so far is that I'm really looking forward to seeing this game released. \o/ I love the plot and I love that you have the endings all planned.

As for solo tips, break the work into small parts and set a deadline for yourself. This makes it easier to focus and get things done. Work on one scene, then work on another. Keep steps small so you don't feel overwhelmed. Just keep at it and the work will vanish right in front of you! :D It's also important to keep yourself inspired while you work on your game, so if drawing art and having placeholders will do that, you should treat yourself instead of rigidly sticking to one aspect of the game (like just writing, for example).

Seriously, good luck! Can't wait to see more updates! :)

Thank you! I missed posting to be honest. I just hope people aren't too mad about me disappearing from other projects. What can I say, university, haha...
I wasn't planning to work on a VN until after I graduate but whoops the pull is too strong and making random CC sprites wasn't enough.

I will do my best to fill the ojisan void in the EOLVN world.

Yeah, that's what I have in mind so far. Art is my strongpoint and I'm making sure to leave that till last haha. For now I'm just working on getting all the section summaries done like this:
wordpad is for pros only clearly
wordpad is for pros only clearly
After that point I'll probably be fleshing out a section bit by bit.
Maybe if I feel myself burning out I'll start planning CGs and not go beyond rough sketch points. Because who knows what design options will change in the writing process.
Wanna know what I'm dreading the most? Backgrounds. I'm more confident in them lately but there's always the struggle of them not looking as polished as the sprite art.

I guess what's hard to deal with most of the time is "I want gratification for what I finished today" vs "I don't want to spoil the whole game in just the thread". It's so hard when you finish a whole new CG in 1280x800px and can't show it and get...well...asspats for it, haha.
Though the aim of this is more to just finish a game rather than have people play it, so maybe I'll just let it go and post away. Maybe keep it to cropped previews of images? It's not like this thread is spoiler free already anyway haha.

Adfghs, sorry, rambled there for a bit.

I think that sounds fine :3. As long as it is at least mentioned in the game I'm sure most people will be fine with it. It'd probably only bother people if it just sort of happened and no one ever mentioned why.

Yeah I know that feeling. It sucks when you can't share what you're working on with anyone XD. Showing it as a cropped or preview image is a good option ^^. Or you could try just linking to the image instead of posting the image directly in the thread. That way people who want to see it can and those who don't want to be spoiled can easily skip past it. And those who did look at it can just put their responses in spoiler tags.

Also the new banner/logo thing looks really nice :].

Thank you! The logo is really a placeholder thing for now, I might ask advice/oogle other people's logos to try and get a super VN looking one but this is the general feel I'm going for.

True, lampshading at the very least seems to be a pretty good way of getting dodgy character choices out the way. God bless medieval tropes.

And I think cropping would work best, that way I can crop out all the parts of the CG I don't like as much and have an excuse to slap a logo on it haha.

Just about finishing the outline for the story, including all choices and endings, and in the mean time distracting myself with roughs of CGs to keep my attention. Might have to scrap the plan to keep the PC ambiguous in appearance just for the sake of ease.
ss (2014-01-23 at 07.18.32).jpg
Though I guess what I'm looking at now is actual writing/scripting, at which point I'm sort of debating how to tackle it:
Do I code it while writing it, and make a list of the different images I intend to use/create, but have to keep stopping every chunk to test and make sure everything's working?

Ideally I'm thinking of writing it as if I were coding it in a word document, and then pasting stuff in and adding the code from there once everything is done. Just because I'm not sure how I'm gonna keep track of assets being added in later (hoping I can find someone who likes the project enough to contribute a GUI and soundtrack, but I'm not banking on it right now).

Haha I don't know I've never actually got this far in a project before so I'm sort of everywhere haha.

I know the feels man. You could do cropped previews if you want to put them up, sure! :D More chances to see Fungii's beautiful art eeee And eeee, a marriage cg--! <3

I think you should do what you like-- the way you write it would be a matter of preference. Either way, I'd suggest uploading your writing in chunks and checking to see if the code works every now and then. It's easier to troubleshoot if you do get errors rather than posting the whole thing all at once and having to rummage through a thousand lines of code.

\o/ Good luck!! Congrats on making it this far! You can do it! :D

I've never played through an oji-san romance before, but this looks really fun. I am getting tiredof seeing really young guys in high school settings (funny how they make me feel so old), so this will make a refreshing change for me.

The characters look very interesting, especially the heroine. I love it when they have some backbone and confidence.

I keep thinking of a dragon every time I look at the Dark King's armour. His magical powers wouldn't be somehow connected to one, would it?

Psshh you're too kind.
Got bored with planning the other day and tried to make a background:
bedroom.png
I'm not all that happy with it, but I think that's mostly because in my head I'm trying to make very typical VN looking backgrounds and obviously I'm not making that. I think I should just shrug it off and just accept however my backgrounds come out i mean i spent like 8 hours on this.

What I'm looking at doing right now is "rough" coding it in word. Like this:
  • ???: "Tyaahh!"
    sfx sword clang 2
???: "Very good! You're improving with your aim. Though your swing is still a little o-- Woah!"
    ???: "Ha!"
    sfx sword swing
    ???: "Easy, Princess!"
    show bg training field
    show trainer, exhausted
Obviously not that accurate to actual coding, but it means I can take notes of what art assets I need as I go. Then when I finally have everything ready to code I can code it chunk by chunk like you said.
Though I'm a little worried about when it comes to choice coding, in case I somehow mess that up and the only way to find out is to go through the whole game myself. Though I guess that's what beta testers are for!

Haha, welcome to my eternal struggle with otome games! Most times the characters I really want to hook up with are side characters or just plain undateables (Hakuoki, looking at you. Why can't I date Shinpachi?????)
I'm hoping that this won't be my one and only game, but every other idea I have except for this is pretty ambitious. I really want to make a multiple (oji-san) game but christ this game is busy enough with just one guy!

Thank you! Sadly no on the dragons, though. I just threw up a bunch of typical villain tropes onto him haha.

strong female character.wav

Decided to scrap nameless/ambiguous protag in favour of something that'll be a little bit less taxing when it comes to cgs. I'm sure people wont be bothered that much by it.

Also, outline is mostly done. Just gotta smooth out the endings for the "Good" Queen routes and iron out the entirety of the Dark Queen routes. Keeping track of ending paths is confusing and I had to make a couple maps to get it right.

Also, worked out a good point to end a demo on! So when I get bored with outlining, I can work on that, which gives me a good list of assets to get ready. Unfortunately I'm the kind of person that likes to give every named NPC a sprite, so whoops, more work for me.

Here's one of them, a trainer in his younger years because there's a brief flashback explaining you and Cenrics origins.
