Butterflies (tenative title) [Family][Drama][KN]

#1 Post by Rozume »

[TW: Contains Depictions of Child and Domestic Abuse]

Developer's Notes: I know I said I'll work on STATiC and a bunch of other ideas, but I decided to put it on the backburner to work on this one. :I (my mind changes a lot, i know otl) But I really am going forward with this one, and I'll be using this thread to update my progress weekly.

Synopsis: His parents are fighting. They are yelling and screaming at each other. They are even hitting each other. But despite this, 9-year-old Alex is determined to make sure his parents stick together no matter what

Characters:

Alex
"Why do Mom and Dad fight all the time?"
An enthusiastic 9-year-old who likes puzzles and figuring out how things work. He doesn't want his parents to get a divorce.

Mom
"You'll pick my side, right?"
A stay-at-home mom who loves Alex dearly. Not so much her husband, anymore...

Dad
"Mind your own business, Alex."
Ever since he got promoted in his job, he's always been busy and out of the house. But is that the only reason?

Aunt Sally
"Consider me your ally."
Aunt Sally doesn't want Alex's parents to get a divorce either, but for what reason?

James
"Let's play a game!"
Aunt Sally's bratty son. He's been acting very strange lately.

Oh, a family-centric story! We don't see enough of these!

1. I'm hoping you're willing to explore important emotional territory without falling back on the usual cliches. It's easy to throw all the blame for a collapsed marriage on one party, for example, but that's usually not how things work.

2. I think that'll be great, especially since this is meant to be from a young boy's perspective.

3. I have none at the moment, but if I think of any, I'll edit them into my post. :)

1. People hitting one another sounds scary. Really, really scary. It pushes a boundary for me (I came from an abusive household) and I think this part would be important to deal with. It sounds like you're tackling emotionally important stuff, this and other things, and I respect that.

2. I like that idea too, for the same reasons as Mad Harlequin.

3. The domestic violence aspect troubles me, as I mentioned previously. Even if both parties are engaging, um. It is unsettling, perhaps more than it should be.

So I turned the "rough draft" into a "zero draft" because I'm not really that confident with my writing orz

But I also added a "game plan"... where I plan 7 months to make a short (5-7k words) KN ~_~ Hopefully things will be shorter, maybe this might be released in 5-6 months haha? Hopefully I don't procrastinate or get distracted *too* much...

@Mad Harlequin

That's what I really hope to do. I admit with the subject matter at hand, I am sort of cautious with it but I think that will go away once I start writing more.

@ArachneJericho

I have some personal experience with abuse, so writing this can be rather difficult. But I made my decision to write it, and I have to go through with it.

1. What do you expect from a story like this?
I expect a sad and somewhat emotional story. Hopefully it'll be handled well.

2. What do you think of having "Children's Book" type illustrations for the art?
I personally think that would be a good thing, as this is from a child's point of view, and maybe soften the story and it's content. So long as it's not silly kind of art.

3. Any questions, comments, or concerns?
Nope~

Makes sense to me. I'll keep an eye on this, I am quite interested.

For me, elements of abuse and/or PTSD resulting from it will always show up in my works. I don't want it to. I want to write light, fluffy, happy pieces; but no. Never ends up that way.

Hey guys! I just wanted to update you all on things: I've decided to do away with the zero draft and start from scratch again, zero drafting wasn't working out for me. Anyways, as I'm planning and outlining and filling out character sheets I realized something... the parents, especially the mom, are much more interesting than the child.

I think this might have to do with the fact that I have more experience writing adult characters than I do child characters orz. I don't know what to do now. Should I revamp my story and tell everything in the mom's perspective (or even multiple perspectives) or keep with Alex's perspective?

It's still early in development, so things can change.

Hey guys, I'd like to update on what's going on with this project.

To start off with, my game group, Cosmic Visual, gained a new member. Since CV is, as of right now, a two person team instead of a one person team that influences which games will get developed and which games won't. So, unfortunately, I'm stopping development of Butterflies.

I know some people are looking forward to this game and it was my mistake to make a thread so early in development. However, if someone wants to take over the project then be my guest. I will happily work with you when I can.

As for what CV is doing right now, we're planning a Fairytale Fantasy game. Of course it's in the ideas stages of development and I imagine it'll take some time to develop. Of course we'll make a thread for it once we have a good amount of progress to show. ^^;

1. I expect a lot of drama and emotions form this kind of family drama that deals with alex and keeping his family together.

2. Yes, I would believe it would be more engaging to readers like me as well!

3. Nope
