The Tales of Aegasia [Fantasy][Twisted Fairy Tale]

#1 Post by kmarsel »

KingOliver and I have teamed up to create our first visual novel. We've been working on it since June 2014 and although we've steadily been adding and hashing and rehashing, progress has been kind of slow. I'm hoping this thread will keep us motivated to continue working.

*Although I listed this as a twisted fairy tale, the characters are only loosely based on preconceived fairy tale characters.

Story:

Kaltha was a survivor in the kingdom of Aegasia, a shadow on the edge of society's perception. She took only what she needed, until that wasn't enough. Then she took what she felt she deserved, pinching from the nobility and the entitled, until the Ghost of Aegasia was born. They said the Ghost was the man of impossibility--never seen, never caught. Under this guise, Kaltha could not be defeated.

Or so she thought.

Pride led her to a daring and ambitious excursion to the castle, in which the Ghost was captured. Nevertheless, impressed by her skill, the monarch offered her a deal. If she agreed to track down and bring back a wanted person of the king, he would pardon her of all her crimes. If she refused, she would face the consequences of her actions.

Kaltha was a survivor. She agreed to help the king, and that is where her journey begins.

Setting:

The story is set in the fictional kingdom of Aegasia where magic reigns and science is considered a black art.

Characters:

Kaltha (Main Character)
Wanted because she is the "Ghost of Aegasia", an infamous thief. Her family was broken up and forced to live on the streets when she was young due to the wrath of a corrupt nobleman, and Kaltha has resented the nobility and monarchy ever since.

Locke (The Frog Prince)
Wanted because he is a known practitioner of science. He hides in the nearby swamps, which no one dares enter for fear of facing the grotesque monster that lives there. For some reason, the monster leaves him alone, which means he's even more powerful and dangerous than anyone expected.

Daralis (Rapunzel)
Wanted because she is the princess of Aegasia. Five years ago, the princess grew increasingly paranoid over her father and feared for her safety. She escaped the castle and locked herself in a high tower deep in the woods surrounding the kingdom. Although many knights have attempted to rescue her (sent by her father), none have been able to defeat the ferocious dragon which protects her or find a way into the tower.

Turner (Rumpelstiltskin)
Wanted because he is a suspect for murder. A notable figure in the community, Turner is the finest carpenter in all of Aegasia, who has been forced into hiding. Five years ago, his nephew went to play in the lake with Merrill's son and neither boy ever returned. No one really knows what happened, but Turner's lack of emotion over his nephew's death drew the suspicions of the kingdom. Still, he was never convicted. Now, the drownings have begun again, and he is the prime suspect.

Merrill (The Pied Piper)
Wanted because he is the leader and instigator of growing civil unrest, and could easily lead a revolt against the monarchy. Another notable figure, Merrill is charismatic, charming, and incredibly personable. He worked in the community as a "pest controller" and was well-liked by all. Five years ago, he lost his son in the drownings and blamed the monarchy for not protecting the kingdom. Now that the drownings have begun again, he is rallying the town to take action against the king.

Structure:

While this game will still include player-made choices, it follows a more rigid structure and linear progression. There are four characters you can pursue, but the choice of which character to pursue is made in the beginning of the game. Once made, the player can only follow that one character's path to completion.

That said, there are 4-5 endings per character, some good, some bad. And the player will ultimately make the decision of whether Kaltha will help the character, or turn him/her in to the monarchy.

At this point, we've hashed out all the world building and running subplots across character arcs, and we're just working on actual outlines now. So far, we have Locke's complete character routes outlined and half of Daralis done. Once we complete the other two outlines we'll get started on writing.

Feedback is very much appreciated. We'd love to hear your thoughts!

Whoa, I love the idea of having fairy tale characters from different stories interact with one another. (Into the Woods <3 ) I'm excited to see how this progresses and really hope that you guys don't drop this. Keep up the good work and know that you have +1 more stalker to this thread. XD

Thanks! It's really encouraging to know that even one person is interested in our game. :)
