Up, Down, Over, Over (UDOU)
A hectic 2D sidescrolling visual novel platformer

Game is a combination of platformer, Starfy style, and dating sim. There will be four levels. Level 2 and 4 are platformers, levels 1 and 3 are visual novel sections. Some of the emotion choices are present in the platformer for flavor (random dialogue)

You push up for yes, down for no, left for maybe, and right for don't know. You meet your soon-to-be-rescuer in level 1, you play the girl coming to get you in level 2, you replay a phone call or meeting in level 3, and the final rescue in level 4.

It's going to be a fun, bouncy parody that doesn't take itself seriously.

We MIGHT consider putting Casey on it, but we'd need more details.

Come to that, I think I'd like more details on here. I mean, the fact that Anna Anthropy's work is a major inspiration sold me on it, but I found that out a different way.

Found an e-mail, got a reply from Anna Anthropy.

Concept art up. Going to be a sidescroller, of course. Combination exploration game, puzzle, and regular platforming challenges but probably not masocore.

The only other kind of thing I can envision is a faux-3D back-scroller... if anyone ever played the special stages in the early Sonic the Hedgehog games, you know what I mean. The POV of a lot of early racing sims too, or the Mario Kart series as well.

Theme: Trust, huh?

Be careful there. There is no "love" stat in Bliss Stage. This is because it's too important a concept to the game to be statted.

How does the gameplay get across that theme?

Visual novel segments get that one across. I just wrote it down on a whim because I was brainstorming. Not all themes are the explicit, in-your-face kind. In fact, sometimes I like subtlety.

Aki and Ren will also have a kind of bond, I'm just not sure what yet. Give me a little more time to crank the gears in my head. My interior spaces are crowded, but I'll sure I'll come up with something interesting.

This game has no stats planned, as of yet. Most platformers don't, except maybe a time meter.

I guess the subtheme would be empowerment of the hero and the heroine. Both of them realizing their potential, getting over their fears together, etc. That's why I wrote down "trust." It's the glue that holds together any long-term relationship.

That character generator can be annoyingly accurate... at least I have a color palette for Ren and Aki now. With some tweaking, it gives me some ideas for today.

Ren's house (He's a hikikomori, but probably not a NEET. Will have junk and clutter everywhere.)

I think I'm going to put the front wall of the house on a separate layer and peel or alpha it as necessary.

Everything will be drawn in one-point perspective for some awesome depth, and sliced away at just about the part where I'm drawn it. So... sometimes, it will go back into infinity and sometimes things will remain close to the viewer.

Thank you, art classes! :mrgreen: I guess that exercise wasn't pointless after all...

Haha, I'm on a roll... more refs, this one for Aki's room... I need some good pics of old-style Japanese roofs... since she has a traditional family and no television or anything.

I'm only planning three endings, I think it will be easier that way...
