I wanted to take a break from Planet Stronghold after working on it all day, so I made this using screen language+ATL:
http://www.didone.com/testing/VB3-all.zip
is a zip containing all the three platforms (Pc,Mac,Linux) of a super short tech demo of what could be a possible Vera Blanc 3rd episode. You can only click on two zones on the screen or exit the game back to main menu
This is how I was thinking to make the game, static 2d painted bgs and a 3d pre-rendered sprite (since doing animations would be too expensive/hard by hand!).
I'm going to post this on various sites and see if there's interest in a game like that. Since would require lot of background and 3d animations, it would be very expensive, so before embarking into such a big project (which wouldn't be started before next summer anyway) I want to be sure there's enough potential buyers 8)

I thought you said you wanted to stop making Vera Blanc?
I'm glad you continue this, because I wanna know what will happen between Vera and Brandon :)

I was accustomed to the old comic-style, and I guess I am quite surprised of this new style~
She looks... so different.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing though, but people who have played the first two because they like the art will be disappointed though XD

PS : Hmmm, I don't think her sprite matches the background very well.

I'm surprised you're going for 2D backgrounds. I think a 3D background would be much better suited to the 3D characters. I've always been a fan of point and click adventures, so this looks like fun to me. Definitely straying outside the realm of the visual novel, though. XD

azureXtwilight: I stopped making the old VN style game because it was totally wrong choice for that kind of game/art style. But I'd still like to make games with that setting. Of course, it must be profitable, otherwise I'm just wasting my time!

sake: Hehe is just a test to see what people think! I haven't made my mind about anything about art yet. I just wanted to see if I could code quickly an adventure engine, I suspected that would have been the easy part!
Yes I could go with full 3d, the problem is that I don't like it :D if I could would just use the comic style again for everything, or all painted 2d, but then the problem would be the character art which is really hard to make animated.

Anyway thanks for the feedback, now I'll resume working on my actual projects, it was just a 2h fun hobby project (for now) :)

Why not some sort of special shader to make it look more like a comic book style? It'd match the backgrounds better, and with pre-rendered characters you wouldn't need to worry if the player's computer could handle it. You'd probably be able to use simpler textures, too.

Well the Poser/Daz studio comic cartoon rendering have always produced crap results honestly. And I cannot afford to spend money for a 3d artist to make a custom model with texture suited for a cartoon rendering for sure!

Just to be clear the actual state of art for indie adventures has this art:

so definitely pixel art and very low res. I could probably render everything in 3d and use such a small resolution to simulate pixel art

Personally I have only tried the demo of the first Vera Blanc so far, but looking only at the graphics I prefer the cartoony style.

I prefer that one too :) was trying to find some alternatives for not going bankrupt if I do the 3rd episode, though probably the easiest solution is not do a 3rd episode! :D

I'm going to have to agree that the 3-D model on that background really just... doesn't look good. I don't like being so blunt, but in this case I really feel like it would ruin the game. It's even more disappointing that the model is so obviously from Poser, as well. If you really want to take this route, you're going to either have to make the backgrounds more 3-D looking, or just do away with the 3-D idea entirely.

As for the pixel art idea, I'm also going to have to oppose your method of changing styles. A 3-D model won't look good pixelized, unless it's in really high resolution. It almost certainly has to be done straight to the style.

Yes, I'd either go with full 3d or use still comic style, but done in a different way than a VN since outside the manga circles people want more adventure games, not VNs :)
