hey, i`m new here (and to the programming/story writing) and i had an idea for the core of a game...

the game is set up in days, during that day you have some choices and based on the choices you make, the story will advance. i was thinking something like the game "true love" for the ones that know the game... you have several variables like:

* money
*day counter (just for fun...i don't have plans on this... perhaps for planning dates?)
*stress (when doing fun things it gets lower but when working it raises and so on)
*powers

well the mail thing for the story is that you can choose to work, to raise money to do fun things an other day... and just to keep it interesting i was thinking to give the option to use special powers... but limited... haven not though this out yet... and when your making good decisions you have encounters with girls... (or boy...but then i have to write 2 story`s i think...) but the it depends on how much times you used a specific power...

the days it self can be something like this:
one day you can choose to go work... like delivering newspapers but then you have lite money, but half a day... or you can go teaching, but then the money you get changes bay how many correct answers you give or something like that but takes a whole day... and when you want to have fun you get a different story every day... like one day your going swimming and an other you can go to a movie or something like that... (you can look at it like one day its a episode of GTO (Great teacher onizuka) and an other day its something like kiddy grade and an other its pokemon... just whole different story`s a day... but what the dating ... when you met one, you get her number and depending on choices you can get a date with her... and of course you can get more dates if your good for her... buying dinner or movie or so on...

for the dates i was thinking to make the dates apart from the main story... and on number base... but you can skip a few if you spend money on her or something like that... need to work it out more...

the special powers are just a way to help the player... there is not a main story... just several story`s on itself but i guess you could say that the dating part gets the overhand on the other story`s

the main idea comes from : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_Love_(video_game)

but with other content in the days. and instead of gods you have a few powers...

Um, I'm pretty sure you are talking about a traditional dating sim. If you google search 'dating sim' you should be able to find examples of that type of game and see if that is what you want to make. Re:Alistair has dating sim elements, as does Lucky Rabbit Reflex and some of Jack Norton's games. Maybe you could check out some of their games as well?

that is somewhat what i want to make, yes.
do you think its a good idea? and one of the bigger problems is getting the art... i cant draw that well... but for the storry... do you think its going to work?

well its almost weekend so im going to give it a go... ill see what hapens

Well, using dating sim elements is fine, like I said, lots of games use them, but they can take some programming as you have to keep track of the stats and what they do.

As for the story, there isn't that much there for me to comment on apart from the magic/power bit. Technically a fantasy type story with dating is definitely doable, but without details I don't think people can tell you if it is a good idea or not. While art is a major part of VNs, it probably isn't your biggest problem right now. What you should focus on is writing your story and planning out what program elements you want to use, so what kind of stats you are going to have, how they are going to work, how they are going to be acquired, how they are going to effect the story, as well as standard programming elements.

Unless you want to invest a fair bit of time into this, maybe it might be a good idea to start on something smaller? Maybe a Kinetic Novel or something with only a few choices?

well i have a lot of time cause i don't have work right now... and the programming is one point... i think ill manege... i have a few people i can ask about it... and i dont care if it takes longer... then im at least not bored :p and there is alwais internet to look things up...

im using ren`py for programming... for as far as i know it can offer what i need and it has a nice tutorial in it and on wiki

Ren'Py also has a framework for dating sims. This might be what you are looking for - http://www.renpy.org/wiki/renpy/DSE

That Wikipedia article on True Love is missing the fact that it is a dating sim. Instead it classifies it as an RPG, which is misleading, to say the least. It does mention that it's a classic example of the genre (failing to mention what the genre is).

P.S.
I think that "what do you think?" is a bad choice for the thread title... ;)

haha yea its a shame thy missed the gender :p

thanks for the framework tip! i just downloaded it.. well i think that ill make a demo in the weekend to give a bit of an impression of what i have in mind..

(ill look first at the framework, if i understand how it works :p)

*edit*
i looked over the script and its a nice base to work on... ill think ill use this instead of making one myself...
