I think it will be very convenient. Why should we rely so much on those illegal websites and spammers? How can we speak or take action against spammers if we ourselves are not willing to boycott them?

Someone would have to be in charge of such a website. How do we know they won't turn evil?

Perhaps you could upload the files to some temporary location, then ask someone with good speed to upload it here?

I think the only reliable and permanent solution is to get your own hosting. I'm paying less than $10/month for unlimited domains/websites at HostGator...

It seems that deviant art has become evil as well.
Ever since I created an account in deviant art, I keep receiving spam. I receive advertisements about clothes, jewellery, bags, things that I have no interest in.
At least, none of our VN websites have become corrupt.

I find it hard to believe that DeviantArt has gone bad. When you registered, you probably checked the checkbox confirming you want these messages. You can uncheck it at any time in your account settings. It is also very likely that there is a link to opt-out in every email (I think it's even required by the law in the US).
If that's the case, it's not spam, since you asked for it. If it takes more than a couple of clicks to opt-out, you might want to check the email headers; perhaps the spam is not really from DeviantArt.

There's that site, there's this forum, and I think at least at one point Spiky was trying to offer free upload space for VNs as well but wasn't getting much takeup (have to ask him though)

I hope he can. It will be very convenient.

Well, if anyone wants to test http://tentcaterpillar.dreamhosters.com/ they're welcome to; it's very early in development, though. (And capped at 50 megs by default; if anyone wants Huge File support they'll need to actually ask me.)

Torrents are also an alternative for free projects.
It has the added benefit that it's decentralised nature makes it pretty independent from third party hosting, though the tracker can be a bit of weak point.

If you're distributing through torrents, you really need permanent seeds - which means bandwidth and an always-on machine that's allowed to run a torrent server,
which may actually be a bit more expensive than tolerable webhosting. You may also need your own tracker; while I think running a tracker is fairly low bandwidth, it's also low enough in profitability (and high in risk, since the warezd00ds use them too) that a number of them disappear after a while. I think torrents might now support HTTP seeds as well - but that also requires a webserver.

Hire someone who's aleady evil to run it, of course. *steeples fingers*

That is the best solution, IMO (though I suspect it's not so good if you're living in a country with a weak currency). Hm. I could probably offer paid Real Hosting (no frills, just SFTP/SSH access and some webspace) at a reasonably cheap per-game rate if people wanted to pay - but I'm not sure if they would, given that renai.us and the forum are free.

Easier said than done, I guess... But if at least one of your websites earns you just $10/month, you have hosting covered for all your other projects, commercial or not.

I didn't realize, you can upload such big files to GDocs. Google Sites have a stupid 10 Mb limit per upload. 1 Gb limit could be overcomed by having a few Google accounts.

My only concern here would be, what if Google changes the limit. I had 100s of files on Google Groups, when they decided to disallow file uploads...
