Read the topic title,
Easy example such as using... let's say, KH2 sountrack for your visual novel (or dating sim, should you prefer to call it).

Indeed, this is not a new thing among RPG Maker games (yes, I'm also one of its user, but that's beside the point), but I've never seen *heard* it in indie VNs made using RenPy... which is actually a bit concerning to me.

What's your thoughts? Is there an unwritten rule that forbids it? Or is it simply because people think musics from another game are... crappy? (in a sense, you might know what I mean)

Because it's obviously illegal?

Because some of the main archives of renpy games forbid any use of unauthorised content?

Because it's highly distracting to the user if music they know well from another context appears in a completely different game?

If there's something that's EASIER to find than licensed art, it's licensed music.

So many musicians out there just giving their music away with various CC licenses.

Go to a job search subforum in a gaming site the the most number of applicants are musicians.

So to me, games that either use ripped music or don't use music at all (except in some rare cases) are kinda insulting.

Every single game can have custom music, and there will be musicians to spare. I think the reason why most renpy games avoid ripped music was that they started with an "original or bust" mentality, even if the initial quality was crap.

Using another game's music is pretty lame, especially when the quality of the game the person has made doesn't even come close to the quality of the game the music came from. I've played RPG maker games with epic music and poor visuals and story writing, it's really tacky.

Oh, and, yeah, it's illegal to use that music without a licence, as mentioned before. ;) That's the "unwritten rule", which is actually a written rule in most countries... It's basic copyright.

This community in particular cares a lot about the legal use of assets, because, well, there's lots of free assets to use in most cases!

@papilon
Well obviously it's illegal... but still, most people just seem to have enough "tolerance" to this sort of thing.
I see... it's definitely great to know that some people still take pride in their original work, despite the fact that it might not be good, yet ^^
Point taken... o.o

@DaFool
Licensed music means that you can 'buy' the music for your own use, right?
It's not 'giving away', by the way. They might be doing it for the sake of art, or only as a hobby. You don't necessarily have to keep your own work just because 'you're supposed to sell it because you can make a lot of money'.
The original or bust mentality are indeed a good thing, but maybe some people just can't be bothered to wait to be... original.

@Fawn
Indeed. Maybe they think a YouTube downloader and a converter can do the job properly :P ah, I know what you mean... :/
Haha, ironic. I even forgot there's a copyright rule before that SOPA and PIPA thing showed up xD
Yes, I am aware of that :D I haven't seen it all, but most works from the members here are pretty impressive, be it writing or art ^^

...and regarding this, I'm truly curious to what will happen after January... but that's another story :P enjoy the internet while you can, they say.

Just go to http://www.jamendo.com/en/ I mean if you make a free game there are tons of music you can freely license.

Even if you were going to make a commercial game, whether licensing off-the-shelf soundtrack or hiring a musician it is almost always cheaper than artists since there's a glut of (mostly unknown) music.

I know that site :) I've been downloading some musics of various genres from there and I'd have to say that it's surprisingly... very good O.o I'm truly grateful that it's free <3

I'll keep that in mind... though it may be a while or never 'til I make a commercial game ^^;
