So I was wondering if I should make my game in 800x600 or in 1280x7681280x720?
Or there was someone before that mentioned a 968(?)x768???

Which do you prefer?

I don't like my visual novels to fill my screen and I prefer games that are 800x600 for that reason. I also like the fact that the window looks more squarish. If I'm playing some other kind of game, I like bigger screens.

The rule of thumb is to just make everything as big as possible and let the player resize the window to preference. You can always make the window smaller, but not larger. People have really huge monitors nowadays, so it's not fun playing a visual novel about a quarter of the size of the screen.

16:9 is 1280x720 I think not 1280x768
I prefer bigger.

I prefer 16:9 but I think VN is not that bad even when they're still in 4:3.

As you can see, I seem to be in the minority. You probably want to go with the bigger size then.

Oh, right. I lost myself there for a moment.

Okay, so I'm probably going with 16:9. But if I make my game in 1280x720, and someone on a smaller monitor plays it, would it break his/her computer? Or is it fine and they could just resize it or something?

It's fine, renpy will just resize it so that it fits in the monitor by default. The player can also adjust the size of the window to any size as well.

I STILL say that the best size is 1280x960. You get much better quality than 800x600 AND you don't have to deal with the awful beast that is widescreen.

Personal preference for games is 1280x720 (known as 720p) for 16:9 and 1152x864 for 4:3. HOWEVER(!!!), if you're going to use such high-resolutions, you should probably put in an option to have the game play at 800x600, for anyone not playing on a computer that supports such large resolutions.

I see... But what's so bad with widescreen?

Btw, what (kind of) code would let me do that?

I would go for 16:9, but maybe creating an option to change the resolution would help smaller resolutions.

Some of us Don't have widescreen monitors.
-- My monitor is 1024x768, standard size. Wide screen on my monitor makes a thick line across the top and bottom. Also, converting huge images to a significantly smaller size screws up the picture because my video card is Not high definition.

I make my games 800x600 or 1024x768 because that's what my monitor/video card can handle.
