So, I was wondering... when one plays or designs a stat raising simulator, no matter what kind of game it is be it a dating sim or a learning game... in this genre, how many would be just far too much for a player to keep track of? What is a good general number for this sort of thing?

And which, by a player's perspective, do you prefer: Bars that are hidden unless pulled up in a menu, or bars that show at all times?

Personally, I like bars that are always shown, and I think... roughly 5-6 is a good number, but I can handle more. I would love to see what others feel about this design aspect however.

other than the fact that 'it depends' should be obvious, I point you in the direction of Academagia as a sign of just how extreme stat-raising can get. HOLY CRAP THAT'S A LOT OF STATS.

People still play it. :)

It really really depends on the focus of the game and the type of gameplay and feeling you're trying to achieve.

Well, I was thinking generally speaking, just to get an idea of how certain people think. I wanted to get a bit of an individual opinion from people here. It depends really goes without saying. XD I know that for some people they would only want 2 or 3, while others don't mind 20.

Kinda like Skyrim. VERY different genre of game, but DSHJGFJKGJKS SO MANY STATS @_@
But I manage to keep track of them well enough, and many others do as well, while others chose to only focus on a couple because it is simply too much.

I think I'll take a look at that game, there aren't enough for me to really go on at the moment, and not much on the numbers end to base anything on. Thanks to mentioning it!

As for the gameplay, I have been mulling over a kind of memory game that would raise stats for different things depending on what you do. It would be very simple and lax, but the stats would influence how you go through and end the game itself.

For dating sims, about 6 core stats is what I'm used to. I love games that add random stats though, like other than stamina/intelligence/charm, they'll have extra stats. Eating lots of ramen gives you an iron stomach stat, running a lot gives you the running stat, or using a particular item repeatedly builds up stats for it.

I'm not a hardcore juggler though, so although I love lots of stats, I wouldn't want them to be outrageously hard to maintain.
