Free background pictures for visual novel?

I'm creating a game solo, Han solo. (Wow... That was bad. First sign I need more caffeine.) Anyways, I'm fine with the programming and even with creating the characters. But it takes me a ridiculous amount of time to create a background, so... Does anyone know a good site to download royalty free (no-copyright) pictures that I could change/use as backgrounds in my game.

(Either that or a guess I'll have to suck it up and do it, or get a partner... ugh)

Are you sure about these? I'm pretty sure those are from a commercial VN called Crescendo so it's probably not okay to use it.

There are a lot of supposed "free" image collections that are absolutely not free, they're just stolen. If you don't know exactly who drew the art / took the photograph and that they have given permission, it's not safe to use.

If you use Windows, you can always download Paint.Net, pull in a photograph you've taken, and then apply some of the artistic filters to get something that looks like it has been drawn or painted. Better, start with that, and then touch it up to make it look more like a background and less like a filtered photo.

Alternately, you can ask nicely if there are artists on here willing to work with you on a project. If your needs aren't too demanding, and they are interested in your project, you may find that you can solve your problem as well as get a free beta tester
