Konett's Background Tutorials: ****NEW - USING SKETCH-UP

#1 Post by konett »

Fungii asked me something about my backgrounds on tumblr, so I made this for her. I thought I'd put it up here too.

This is generally how I colour the parts in these backgrounds pictures:

God they're just sooooooooooo amazing. I wanna cry with awe at how perfect your backgrounds are.

I was going through your art tag earlier and I came across that surf shop background sketch again, how do manage to lay stuff out so well!? I normally get distracted when it comes to actually filling up a scene.

Thank you C:

Oeh, I don't really know an answer to that, haha.
I can try to explain my steps, though.

With the surf shop it went something like this:
  • It needs surfboard, obviously. They are big and i don't want them to block out anything, put them against the wall.
  • Maybe some racks for wet suits?
  • Let's at some display stands to merch from famous surfers?
  • Posters! Can't go wrong with those.
  • The float thing on the wall (don't know the English word haha) AND ROPES
  • Some other swimming stuff? Add it to the clothes racks on the sides.
  • a counter and register.
  • Price cards.
I knew everything was going to be wood based, so that added a lot of detail on it's own.

IDK I hope this makes sense, somehow.

Thank you so much! I really hope these will be useful and that people can learn something from them.

I'm thinking of showing my process when I use Sketch Up as base in backgrounds. Maybe people will find that interesting?

I think that would be very helpful! :) Your backgrounds look very professional and a lot of artists have difficulties not only coming up with a good sketch, but then pulling it off in the right perspective. I personally would be very interested to see how you use Sketch Up :)

Thanks again for the tutorial! I hope one day I'll have the will power to try and be at least half as good as you. I commented on this thread a while back, but never really tried working on BGs until now, since the project I'm currently working on is asking me if I could do the BGs for them along with the sprites. Well, you're tutorial is really easy to understand~ So, if you have any more tutorials floating around on the net, I hope you'll share them with lemmasoft!

And- without further ado, here is a drawer. Just one.

I'm glad you found this helpful! I have a few tutorials, but they are not about backgrounds, haha.

That's great!

It took a while, but here I have a new tutorial/walkthrough on how I use Sketch Up in backgrounds such as this one:
Image
The building is a model for a school I made. I also created some models for a class room, and some beds. I'm not very far in this project haha.

Sorry for any spelling/grammar errors. I didn't reread anything, and they are bout to be in there.
If anyone has any questions, I will happily answer them for you C:
Also note that the background was done in 20 to 30 minutes. It took longer to create the tutorial itself.

On another note, I am working on a thread that will contain a lot of free resources for use in non-commercial projects. I'm still figuring out the linking and stuff, but it will contain things I've created but haven't used (and I won't have time to use next to my other projects). Backgrounds, sprites, items, GUI assets and the like. So please keep an eye out for that in the Creative Commons section. I will try to have it up somewhere next week.

I have a question... How do you do that texture again? Did you paint directly on the flat shapes? Or do you draw on a separate layer and make it overlay or whatever (so the shadow/highlight still shows)?
