Hello guys...

Wondering if you have any input on how close and where your sprites should be standing. I personally like my sprites fairly up close and personal, but I'm wondering if this bugs people and they prefer their sprites further back.

Trying to figure out how to place my characters.

In the screenshot showing figures A, B, and C, I'd like to go with C (the rightmost figure), but am worried this is too close for the majority of the game.

Also, please disregard the background...I figure the perspective and height will need to be changed depending on whatever positioning ultimately gets chosen.

Thanks for any advice!

(Incidentally the resolution I've decided upon is 1280 x 720, if it makes a difference.)

Personally, I like B. Not too far but also not too close.

And... Is it just me or the girl a little bit too tall? She's almost filled the height of the screen... If I can I, prefer to see the difference in height between the characters in the game I play. But then, hey, it's just my opinion anyway. :D

Option B, the middle girl. I like to see more of the character's bodies, and I also want a little breathing room so it doesn't feel like they are crowded right up into my space. Or each others, which is why I like widescreen format.

I feel it is very important to make characters the proper size in relation to each other too, like this:

I like varying the positions of the characters (close up, middle distance, far away), depending on the scene, but I'm different.

I don't recall seeing any criticism specifically addressing how close or far away the characters are.

Go with a style YOU like.

Poorly done hand drawn art is still poorly done art. Be a Poser (or better yet, use DAZ Studio 3D) - dare to be different.

That's because she's actually standing on one of those step stools...

No, bit really, you are correct! I just randomly put the characters on the screen to try to figure out how close to make them. She is way too tall relative to the others because of this.

Thanks for the answers, guys!

Very helpful screenshot, LateWhiteRabbit, but is the second one broken?

It's important to show the bottom of girl's trunk inside the window in ero/galgames, so we use Opinion B or middle of A and B in the most time. Option C can be used occasionally, but not always. I don't know how yaoi games look though.

Personally, I prefer A or B. C is in my bubble. Things gets uncomfortable fast if I see it for long. On the other hand, it depends on the character's personality, i.e. someone standoff-ish will probably keep his or her distance and inch forward as s/he gets to know you better/as the game progresses. (I've always wanted to play a game that pays attention to that kind of detail, but get real, it's too much work. XD)

Shouldn't be, but just in case I edited my post to use a different image source.

Nyaatrap knows what's important in sizing sprites!

I like A and B. The former makes it feel like I'm a third person, watching everything unfold, which works well when it's a third person pov/I'm not being spoken to. The second, on the other hand, would be nicer in games where it's first person pov, or the characters are talking directly to a me!MC that's not on-screen.

C makes me feel like my personal space is being invaded. ಠ_____ಠ

you can do what some games do and move the sprites in accordance to their proximity to the protag. like if a character moved in to whisper something you can use C.

The best idea is to make your sprites absolutely huge and then resize them so that you can use whatever distance from the narrator that the story needs!
