How do you make cell shading?

I'm learning. And I can't seem to make the cell shade perfectly. I don't know where the shadow goes exactly, and it just doesn't make sense when I try hard not to make... gradation (?)

A preference of my practice (as well as my commission, please don't use it in anyway)
here

I'm trying to have something around this:

And this is my usual shading:

I want to draw more, but I can't find time while I have to attend this study camp for 1 month. I hate it.

Are you doing things like choosing a light source and using reference pictures? You'll probably want to study how the light falls on the human body and clothing and make sure that all of your light is coming from one main source. Your practice picture shows that you know the techniques needed to make it look nice, and you apparently know about light sources to a point, but the figures look like the were shading individually and brought into the piece.

I'm not the best on giving advice, but you can probably find a lot of stuff to help you out onhttp://www.ctrlpaint.com/ I suggest watching a lot of videos on that website even if they don't all have to do with shading. You'll learn a lot from them. Here's a couple of lighting guides that I've saved together as well: http://letslearnart.tumblr.com/tagged/lighting. Not a lot, but it should help a little hopefully!

This is how I paint my drawing.

Theory: Any figures consist of simple geometric figures. All you have to know is how to image your drawing geometrically, plus how to shade Cube, Cylinder and Sphere.

I suggest start from monochrome. Here is one of my wip painting https://p.twimg.com/AqFjUMRCIAEqzkp.png:large

Firstly, decompose a human form into 5 cylinders and 1 sphere ―― a trunk, 4 limbs and a head. Then shade each simple solids roughly.
Secondly, go into details. for example, an arm consists of 7 cylinders and 1 cube ―― 5 fingers, an upper arm, a lower arm and a palm. Then shade each solids carefully. Repeat this on every limbs, trunk, e.t.c.
Finally, go into more details. Repeat this until you satisfy the result.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks! I learned to make it simple 3 dimensional shape right now. Although I need to learn more how to imagine the shadow...
