As for my naming style, I usually go to Google Translate, pick words my character is associated to, then translate said terms in different languages. I list them down and pick the one that doesn't sound too absurd. For Withering Blossoms, I use Greek, Latin and some other Asian languages. But one of my most unique naming techniques is that I translate certain phrases in certain languages, then stick together the words. If that doesn't work, I try another form of the phrase, translate then I'd slang it a bit.

My naming style's pretty crazy, I know. XD

If there is a Nikephoros Bryennios in WB, count me in for the ride.

Seriously though, this is a very decent way of coming up with names. My only suggestion is to do a quick research on the naming norm of the culture in question to make sure the names aren't too out there.

Well, I do a quick research with the names I come up with, since they might mean something else in a different language. Just makin' sure.

XD

:o You can make a revision in history for names. Maybe you can find any interesting names from old times. :D I love history and I like to list some of females and males who gave an impact to their surroundings and some of them turning everything upside down despite of their weakness or maybe disadvantage in any situation occurs. :!: After that you may go to library and borrow some books if you don't bother.

All you need to do is get some brief information from internet about the target place's history you choose in your game. :P
Sometimes you will meet unimaginable interesting information that you might want to add it in your game, from the special and unique characteristic of someone, things in their possession to an unexpected things they've done or dream to pursue. Yes, I've always meet unexpected surprise in histories and such.

But you have to make sure the source of history information. Many of them have been set and written for political or dogma benefits and manipulate the history, by putting false information as a fact and hides the truth.

 A bag!

I would just tell everyone it was German since it means "lion", which is infinitely cooler. 8)

This is what I like to do. In this way you can achieve a naming theme that won't blatantly obvious (unless maybe the reader is a linguist) and you can make stupid puns or foreshadow events and your average English-speaking reader won't catch them. XD

After getting interested in language and studying the origins and meanings of different names, I have to say I am surprised at how many people in this country blindly choose a name for their kids just because they think it sounds cool...

I personally think you should chose character names for maximum effect and meaning, but that's just me. I enjoy those subtle details in stories because I feel like it shows that the author cared enough to add that extra layer of symbolism.

I have Japanese characters with Japanese names in a story set in Antarctica... but !@%$ that.... I have characters with different heritages to compensate.

well, there are weird names (to bad names) that can probably give some plot of sorts to a story.

Speaking of Bad naming... I (most of the time) intentionally name my characters really bad with malicious intentions... These 4 you see here from my old game The Fucking Question are named after my drinking buddies (back when I still abuse my body with lots of alcohol)

Another game I've been working on and off (Heavy Metal Girl Madonna) had characters named after 80's pop stars...

Madonna - The Protagonist
Cindy Lauper - Childhood Friend / Future Arch Nemesis
Tina Turner - Acting Sister-Figure / Future Arch Nemesis

I tend to just give characters the first name that comes to my mind.

Ah, I mis-typed. XD I have the correct name explanations in the WIP thread (and in the game script), I just sort of have had autumn on the brain lately because that's the current time period in the actual game where I'm writing so far. Masaharu is spring, Shuuki is autumn, Natsume is summer, and their sister Fuyuka is winter.

Strangely, "Loewe" means "lion" in German. So "hear me roar" all the way...

Different cultures name their children differently and for many reasons. An example would be the Hispanic community and my own given names (Juan Salvador) My first name is after a pratron saint of one of the cities in Mexico for the fact that that saint is known to perform miracles (She once brought back someone from the dead, or at least that's what her legend says and my middle name comes from my Godfather/Uncle who's middle name is also Salvador.

Usually, however, kids are named after people (At least from the people I know this is true)

The ancient Romans would frequently just name their kids with ordinals in the order they were born; then when the child had attained something, they might end up with a "real" name.

So your name would be your father's name plus the number of son or daughter you were.

Primus (first)
Qintus (fourth/fifth? Can't remember)
Tertius (third)
etc.

If you watch gladiator and really listen to the names of the soldiers and commoners, you can see this -- most of them have a number in their name.

What you're missing is
Secundus (2nd)
Quartus (4th)
and the Quintus is the 5th

And so on. There are actually a few Sextus's (6) in Roman history, though I think Septimus's (7) were rare.

The feudal Japanese were just like this, by the way

Daiichi (Big first)
Daini (Big second)
Daisan (Big third)
...and so on are perfectly valid Japanese first names for boys.

XD I never knew that. But I always thought Daisuke was pretty amusing.

I can totally understand, I have the hardest time naming my characters. Sometimes I'll even just make a notation like (protagonist) and go back and fill them in after I'm finished. I might just over think things a bit in that regard. If anyone has some good general tips to help with this, I'd love to hear them.
