Would this possibly be easier to script like?

#1 Post by Shinoki »

I often get stuck when trying to start write the script for a VN (then, again, I get stuck writing everything besides essays...) since I want to write it like a very descriptive story because I can't really visualize the things happening.

I have an elective course in school right now that's about video editing, very lax video-creation and stuff. When we write scripts, we do it in two columns. One is for the video and the other is for audio.
In other words, it's kind of like having a two column diagram of Visual and Script dialogue stuff in the case of a visual novel.

Do you think that'd make it easier? How do you usually write?

I'm not sure about it. A VN script is closer to a book's narrative than an audiovisual one. In a movie, TV series or similar, our script is made to be fully translated into pictures and sound. But in a visual novel, the script is (partially) made so the player actually reads it.

So... I personally think a "normal" literature with annotations would work better.

I didn't write my script like a novel, but I didn't write it in the two column formate either (it is an interesting idea). Rather, I wrote it in a play format.

If you tend towards over description, then you might want to use play/screenplay format. It might stop you from being over descriptive of things that should be expressed in visual form...it is a visual novel after all!
A Close Shave:
*Last Thing Done (Aug 17): Finished coding emotions and camera for 4/10 main labels.
*Currently Doing: Coding of emotions and camera for the labels--On 5/10
*First Next thing to do: Code in all CG and special animation stuff
*Next Next thing to do: Set up film animation
*Other Thing to Do: Do SFX and Score (maybe think about eye blinks?)

I use trooper6'3 technique, but I suggest that you use what works best for you.
Some of my visual novels are at http://www.the-new-lagoon.com. They are NSFW
Poorly done hand-drawn art is still poorly done art. Be a Poser (or better yet, use DAZ Studio 3D) - dare to be different.

As one who draws many random things and has far too many WiPs that never see the light of the Internet....
I recommend not using my method of just writing whatever comes to mind and creating assets that you only might need...

I am not a smart person.
I'm offering commissions!

I approach visual novel writing differently than I do with other forms of prose. I suppose the most similar way may be a play script. I keep descriptions minimal because the visuals can do that work for me. It's not a two-column approach, but I make sure to put in #comments (the hashtag tells Ren'py that it's only a comment and not something to be executed) that mark off character movements & expressions as I go. It makes it easier when I have to go back and code things in. I think a two-column approach would slow me down too much, to be honest... I like directly writing into Ren'py and using #comments as reminders much better. :)

Thanks! If it doesn't work out, I'll try some of the methods you guys use.

Did the play style go well for you?

Build the basics first, then add all the fun bits.

You've got to work it out for yourself.
I did screenwriting for a time, but even then it's different because you've got to focus on branching and endings and options.
So VN writing is just... VN writing really.
