The only time I’ve ever been bothered by the music in games is if it’s terribly unfitting to the situation or doesn’t sound good with the other songs. Having a song done by an orchestra and then having an upbeat, electric sounding song worthy of an 80s movie in the same game is pretty distracting. Then it continues to bother me every time the song plays.

The music is good for setting the mood, so I like to have it on.

To be perfectly honest, it's much much more distracting if there's no music. So much so that if I come across one without any, unless there's a very good reason for there not being any, I'll drop it like a hot potato. It's like playing a VN with no art.

It doesn't matter how good the music is, I often find I can't focus if on the game if there's background music. Incidentally, I do this for ALL video games I play, not just VNs.

I don't know if it's just a weird quirk of mine, or what. Do the majority of you like having music in the background?

Sometimes I do, though that is merely because it sometimes gives me a major headache.
Though when the volume is turned on, it helps me getting into the atmosphere created.

I turn them off only in public places.
At home, I turn them on because usually the music sets the mood.

I love music in my VN, especially games with great music such as Umineko. They have a big variety of music in their episodes. Music is very important to me to help create the right mood and feel for the game, but if it is executed porrly I'd rather have it turne off.

Probably that's why I put 40+ songs in doppelganger anyways ._.

I love music in VN's, often I have to do something else when I'm playing a VN, and then I leave the VN on in the background, and do what I had to do whilst listening to the current BGM... It's relaxing and fun...

I only turn off the music if there's too loud and too rock..( I don't know how to say...just too many electric guitar voice
or same, with a lyric, cause I will only listen to the lyric and cant get a focus on the story XDDD
Music have a good effect that it can create motion of the story, but in the other hand, some of those really are too loud and makes us cant focus to read.
Sometimes I always listen to the music while I am doing my job, it can be a relax :)
Maybe turn down the voice will get a little help?O.O

I do!

I don't find the sound distracting though.

I actually get a headache most of the time when I'm reading a VN and having the music turned on. This is honestly really annoying, because I know that the music is an important aspect of the game.. but playing a game with a headache is impossible. So usually I listen to it for a while when I first play the game and turn it off; sometimes I turn it on in special or important scenes to see which music is being used there.

Nah. but only instrumentals. I can't focus at all if it has lyrics >o<
and if it doesn't have music at all. it feels...empty, and i can't put my own, because i get discracted by it >o<

I do find sound effects annoying though sometimes

For me, music in VN's distract me from real life :D. If the music is really good like dreamenddischarger, I find myself stopping to listen to it instead of continuing with the story.

I generally find sound effects and voice acting nice as well.
Corpse Party does a wonderful job at terrifying any unprepared soul through strategically placed sounds along with the eerie music / lack of it looming over your ears the whole time. Though sometimes the blood curdling screams become rather superfluous (especially when you die over and over and over again).

Strangely I only get headaches if I try reading while in small moving vehicles, I wonder why?
