Hip Hop/Indie Rock Music - How to Find Songs/Composers

#1 Post by Obscura »

Hi all,

Does anybody have any tips for finding music/composers who specialize in tracks with a hip hop beat or indie rock feel?

I am finding lots of excellent, awesome composers who make great game music and am finding cool samples of stuff all over the place, but I'm having difficulties finding composers or sites that specialize in these two kinds of music. Made specifically for games (meaning no lyrics, not too intrusive, etc.)

I'm about THIS close to buying a bunch of loops and doing all the tracks all myself, which would be tragic, because I know there are people who'd do a far better job than me.

The composers would be paid/tracks would be purchased.

You could try creating a list of composers who have a decent, eclectic body of work and the asking one of them to try it out. If someone has written jazz, bossa nova, ragtime and an Irish jig and written them well, then there's a good chance they're someone who's able to dissect and sufficiently emulate any genre.

I have no idea where composers specialising in the genres you mentioned would hang out though :( All I can think of is stupid stuff like "look on SoundCloud or YouTube!" which you've probably already done... I'm guessing you want people who are actually interested in VNs? You could maybe try looking at some of the composers on moddb / indiedb -- I seem to remember incidentally running into a lot of profiles with people who had that sort of music (also, check the job boards there). Here's like the only relevant composer I can remember from moddb. His YouTube has samples of his music. From the quick listens I did I didn't hear any hip hop, but maybe he'd be able to do it.
StoryDevs — easy-to-search profiles for VN devs (under construction!)

One artist I would recommend is Anitek from Jamendo. I don't know where to contact him for commissions, but all of his tracks are on Jamendo Pro, so you might be able to just pick and choose what you like and go from there.

One tip would be to search for beat producers instead of composers. Your results will probably be a lot more in line with what you're looking for.

Yikes, it costs $900 $975 per track to use Jamendo for a video game? Perhaps I'm not reading this correctly here?

Ahh, sorry. I was looking at rates for software instead of computer games. I'm not sure if a visual novel would count as software or a game by their definition, since it seems like the license for a game is intended for multiple platforms. It might be worth asking about it.

Ah, no worries. I found a couple of more sites like Jamendo that seem like they might do the trick.

Can you post any examples of the kind of music you're looking for?

Oh hey thanks, I've got almost all the music covered now (I posted this a while ago), but if you're wondering, I was looking for stuff like (removing all the vocals):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_i1xk07o4g (Vampire Weekend)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgyWhlXQ1cY (Phoenix Foundation)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iY91hVZqhHY (Pavement)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nLknje5E9E (Digable Planets)

Not exactly like the above, but stuff with a very similar and quirky feel.
