Find no deriv music you really like? Just ask!

#1 Post by dorne »

If, like me, you have been looking for tracks to use in your projects, and you come across the perfect music for your scene, you may encounter a Creative Commons clause named 'No derivatives'. This means you cannot adapt or build upon the work in question. There is fine print that states that music in conjunction with images synchronized together is prohibited. So no go with visual novels.

In this case all you need to do is simply ask the author/copyright holder of the music to waive no derivatives, or use a different license that would allow you to use it in your projects. Let them know what the work is being used for, and send them thanks for making such a great piece of music.

The worst that can happen is they say no, in which case its time to move on to other alternatives. Besides, it is nice to talk to the artists who would have their works used by you. Make sure you keep copies of your correspondence to record that you did speak with the artist and agreed to certain terms.

I made this post because I realized in the middle of finally working the BG music of my VN that three songs were no derivs. I managed to get ahold of an artist for one of the tracks, so I can keep that music, but the rest I did have to replace.

Do you have any suggestions as to where to find contact details? for example, I really like this music for my game http://www.jamendo.com/en/artist/337058/tavola-rustica, but can't seem to find any e-mail adress, I could write to.

Do you know who the artist is? They normally have some kind of website or something. If the artist is from another country, it may be thickier, but you can still find them. I was lucky enough to find the composer who did a lot of the Bomberman music and was actually able to get in contact with her. So you never know.

You can mail him here: http://partition-classique.com/Mail.html

His website is http://partition-classique.com/Bienvenue.html, click on the picture for MOI - ME then Envoyez-moi and it will take you to the same place. The website was found on jamendo.
