Is this style acceptable?

#1 Post by Deshtat »

I'm still learning, and I guess I'll always be, but I was wondering if my artworks could set up properly in a Visual Novel.

The fact is that I never learnt manga-like style. I'm more used to pseudo-realistic style. It seems I can't paint the skin the same way I paint clothes, metal and stuff. It gives my work a strange look, and I feel there's something odd in it. I think I might need to practice a little before I can take part in a Visual Novel.

Here's an exemple. I just finished it. Maybe I'll edit it in the future, or whatever.

Any opinion? Do you think it's alright? Or should it be done another way?

Sorry for the aproximative english again x)

It seems fine to me already. After all, the new trend in anime is towards more semi realism. I don't think they have to be big eyed manga characters to have mass appeal in a VN.

Maybe you're right, I guess ^^ Thanks.

But still, I think that the skin and the fabric don't match so well... I'll see about that.

I agree with Sundownkid.
Some of my visual novels are at http://www.the-new-lagoon.com. They are NSFW
Poorly done hand-drawn art is still poorly done art. Be a Poser (or better yet, use DAZ Studio 3D) - dare to be different.

The skin is a little matte, but that's more about the art style you personally desire than whether it's "good" or not. As is, it would be perfectly acceptable.

I like the art. Doesn't need to be anime. There is room for a lot of variety in the VN world.
A Close Shave:
*Last Thing Done (Aug 17): Finished coding emotions and camera for 4/10 main labels.
*Currently Doing: Coding of emotions and camera for the labels--On 5/10
*First Next thing to do: Code in all CG and special animation stuff
*Next Next thing to do: Set up film animation
*Other Thing to Do: Do SFX and Score (maybe think about eye blinks?)

I'm all for art in VNs leaning more towards semi-realism. I like moe, but I like well done realism or semi-realism too.

And I'm always a fan of girls wearing overalls with no shirt underneath. I think, as a Southerner, I'm required to find it super attractive.

I definitely would like to see more of this kind of art in finished games, though maybe the texture on her overalls is too strong. Lower it a bit, and see if you can make the skin shadows darker to match the clothes.

I'll try that ^^ Thanks.

Cheers to that! xD

Thanks everyone, I think I will keep this style for now. I just need to fix some little things.
I think I'll start to look for a VN project when I find the time... ^^

I like it because its your own style. I dont like seeing the same style in games all the time (petite characters with big eyes etc.), which makes your work stand out. Plus I love reading VNs with characters that don't look ten years old.

Thanks for the support ^^ Here is a new one. Again, there is that cloth texture that may be a little too strong, but I'm too lazy to fix it right now x) Same thing for the duck feet...

Oh well, I guess I'll take a nap for now x)

I don't mind at all. Mixing it up always makes it unique. I mean, the project I'm working on (it's in my signature)...well, it's way beyond anything like manga or semi realism.

Also, don't force yourself to draw a certain way. Go with your OWN flow, do what you want. And if this is the style you like drawing, just keep at it ^_^

Thanks Pineapple ^^ I think this is what I'm gonna do. I'm quite happy with what I have now. It still needs to be improved, but I guess it will do for now.

Here's a male character I just finished. He looks a little sickly, but that's what I wanted, so I'm satisfied with him ^^

[EDIT : Now that I think about it, I forgot to work on his body hair >< Oh well... ]

I actually really like your style.^^
The only problem I can think of is...
...why do the girl's feet look so manly?

Otherwise, it's really cool! Loud textures and all!^^
