Even the very first Batman movie wasn't bad, was it?

Which one are you defining as 'first'? The one with Michael Keaton? The one with Adam West? The old racist serials? :)

Until recently it was thought that comic book movies, like video game movies, were doomed to be shite, and the recent Fantastic Four movies are still pretty bad from most rumors (I haven't seen them), even if not as bad as this one. And if you're an X-Men fan, do you remember Generation X? How about Supergirl, the movie?

The counterpoint is Speed Racer the Movie, with a franchise that is in fact held dear by many 30+ fans, was directed by the Wachowski brothers, had a family-friendly story, but got panned by the critics and failed badly at the box office.

At least Hollywood won't put its greedy paws on Ultraman.

I was thinking of this one. The first I ever saw.

I'm not saying all super heroes (because that's what it's about most often) movies are good, but I see more good ones than anime adaptations so far ^^;

What do you define as "recently"? When The Dark Knight came out, when Iron Man came out, or when V for Vendetta came out? :P Or are you talking about Spider-Man...

Or when Superman (1978) came out...

I mean, it's expected that 90% of superhero movies will be crap... because 90% of everything is crap.

That, mostly. At least in some corners it seemed to be something of a tipping point, moving opinions from "comic book movies will probably suck" to "comic book movies = big money".

But obviously, there are good and bad movies all the time.

I don't think thirty years ago can be "recent" in the realm of the movie industry...

And Spider-Man was terrible as an adaptation! It was clearly not meant to appeal to fans in any way; Peter Parker was changed completely, from a wise-cracking nerd to a mopey pretty-boy. Nobody else was changed quite as badly, but very few of the rest of the cast resembles their counterparts, either... and more importantly, the stories just don't feel like Spider-Man. It's a great example of how even in incredibly successful American adaptations held in general high regard, accuracy to the source material means squat.

(And I suspect experience doesn't play in slightly. The first big Batman movie was the Adam West one, which both very much followed the the campy overtones of the comics at the time, and is generally considered great. Burton's Batman, despite being a product of a completely different era in comics, was also considered to be highly accurate and was well acclaimed. Clearly you can do both, on the first try!)

It's funny that you cite that, because Speed Racer was a perfect adaptation. It didn't follow any part of the anime's story to the letter, but it unquestionably followed the spirit to the letter; and visually, it was right out of the cartoon. Bright colours, VERY close renditions of the designs-- it even included the most ridiculous of visual cues, the impossible "Speed Racer" perspective where cars appear to drive forwards then UP. You basically couldn't possibly have a closer adaptation.

And it tanked miserably.

So I think I can understand why people might get the impression that highly faithful adaptations of childrens' anime as mass release films might not be the best of ideas, given how well the most memorable one we got did.

This movie is going to be the ultimate desacration of all that was good in the first Dragonball. As a too-many-years-old fan I'm tempted to gough out my own eyes with the ridiculousness I'm witnessing in this movie. And the sequel is already programmed :x

Not to mention there's also a NGE live-action movie under development... And I'm not fond of this...

You don't know? It's Neon Genesis Evangelion :o

I don't know what to say, but true fans will surely call this attempt a total desacration . Dragonball movie doesn't seem that bad as this, though. Maybe because 20th Century Fox will be responsible for it...

Well... All we have to do now, is wait :)

Yeah, that's all it is. So I wouldn't say it looks like a disaster yet :P

Besides, that was some years ago - and the project seems dead now because of lack of funding. So it may not happen at all.
