Is anyone here going to Sakuracon 2010? It's April 2-4. I'm going to be an exhibitor there, and I'm looking for possible (not sure how it's going to pan out yet) room-sharing. Please let me know if you might be interested :)

Hope to see some of you at the con!

(The exhibit is still secret for now >: ] )

Washington State Convention and Trade Centre, Seattle, Washington.

Looked it up on their site. :3

(not that anyone would care, but I obviously won't be there, I doubt very much I'll ever attend any other convention, and certainly not one in the US... I'm sick of planes already ;_; )

I was vaguely considering it, but considering the current insanity regarding planes and what they intend to do to passengers, I am NOT making any travel plans for a while!

There will be a comics convention in my home city during April 2010. And I'm already planning to attend Anime Central in May 2010 (the event is currently six months away, but to reserve a room at a hotel next door, I ended up paying $90 per night...) So I can't quite make time for Sakura-con. Sorry.

And what do they intend to do to passengers? Throw them out from 1000m above ground ^_^ (just kidding). Really, I never hear things like that... so I want to know.

The things I've heard:

Disabling the inflight maps (which might mean disabling all in-flight entertainment)
Patdowns of all passengers focusing on the torsos and inner thighs (yeah, that's going to be fun for female types)
No carryon bags except one small handbag (purse)

During the last hour of flight:
NO pillows/blankets
NO access to your handbag, it must be put away
NO leaving your seat for any reason
Hands must be fully visible at all times

I've also heard that after a day of this they realised it was insane and stopped doing some of that, but I'm really not sure what's going on

Hm... I'm debating if I should offer them my Ren'Py panel.

(And, for the record, the new security crap is stupid and dangerous. It was passengers moving about the cabin that stopped the incident, not TSA rules.)

The way I know about it, the current security procedures in place were already sufficient enough to prevent the guy from bringing abroad a real bomb and the make shift device turned out having all the destructive potential of a small firecracker. All it did was light the guy's pants on fire and the plane was already on the ground anyways. The new security procedures are all for strictly political reasons... They have nothing to do with fighting terrorists and more to do with getting a certain bill squeezed through Congress.

That isn't true. According to ABC News, the bomb contained 80 grams of the explosive PETN. 50 grams is enough to blow a hole in the side of an airplane.

It's a real bomb that was stopped, not a firecracker.

Bah, don't lap up everything the news says without thinking. It was just a makeshift device that didn't even work. The media is just trying to construct a story out of a shoddy terrorist attempt because they need a story to sell. Maybe if it were a proper bomb, then the explosives might actually have been able to be sufficient to blow up a plane, but the fact is that it was certainly not a proper bomb, but an modified underwear. I am also skeptical of the bonkers over the Al-Qaeda link. It's not as if Al-Qaeda is some all knowing monolithic organization... I honestly half think that nobody in the Al-Qaeda leadership actually knew that this was going to happen and they only took credit once the media went crazy over it just to reap the glory.

PyTom: What do you mean by offering the Ren'Py panel?

I have a Ren'Py panel I sometimes do at cons. I'm debating if I should offer to do it at Sakuracon... I wonder when their panel submission deadline is.

I can't find a specific deadline for panel submission, but it's still going on. Their requirement seems to be that you're a pre-registered attendee. You should come :)
