Wouldn't you be able to do it in flash and onion skinning?

Do you mean in real time ? I guess you could if the whole game was in flash. Yet, it may take more time considering one only needs an image to get started.

I suspect it is done in similiar method. You might need only one image to create all of the animation but be aware that it is a whole engine that creates those animations in real-time, and they had to write it first :)

I wonder how much they want for that middleware package - they don't write about it anywhere and you have to send them a letter of inquiry first. Tacticle bastards :) Eitherway, I guess it's out of a reach of most average game developers...

Yeah, it's neat stuff, but I suspect not something I'm likely to get my hands on any time soon.

Judging from what I hear about Japanese game development in general, I don't think Japanese game companies are used to middleware as much as the western developers. Even internally developed middleware.

On a technical level, this is nothing special or innovative. Similar systems have been used for animated sex scenes for ages; this is simply applying the same technique to normal sprites.

On an artistic level, this is a huge success. Kudos to the artists/animators involved.

Indeed. It's very seamless and quite nicely executed.

...You know, for some reason, when I watch the videos, how the characters move remind of Vanillaware and how they animate their characters in their games. Hmmm... I wonder why? :\
