My VERY first visual novel? DND: Poisoned. It hooked me FOR LIFE.

In my opinon, the best is either Ever 17, Clannad, or the Higurashi and Umineko franchises.

Poisoned=win. All the bad endings had me going , but in a good way. Then again, I did that in the good paths for... different reasons ;).

First Kinetic: True Rememberance
First VN: Kanon
(honestly can't remember which came first, perhaps it was at the same time...)

Best: Have to say I love Clannad for all its worth, and thoroughly enjoy the Higurashi fanchise (though Little Busters! looks good from what has been translated)

Freelancer specified "best VN or KN," so that rules out a few titles that emphasize gameplay that I really liked (RE: Alistair, Tokimemo Girls Side DS)...

Before I finish reading everything that has been posted since I last checked I want to say that you can choose things like that if you like.
Okay...Now that I read all of it.
I pretty much am trying to lump all B-games together.
I probably could have done a better job of that though.

First: not sure. Narcissu I think.

Best: Ever17 probably, because of the impression it left on me. Comic Party and Kanon have sentimental value :P

I think the first VN that I played was actually Tales of Lemma back in 2003 when it was just finished. :)

As for the best i think i have to agree with Ever17 - but everybody always mentions Ever17 and forgets the rest of KID's Infinity series... (Never7 and Remember11) which are just as good and for Remember11 the (unofficial) English translation patch was just released.

First: Some dos h-game with the name Angel3x in the zip... but, my first English one was Fatal Relations.

Best: (As to story, it's a tie between Planetarian and Narcissu 2nd for me but...) Cross Channel for having the most amount of balance between a compelling, albeit slow-to-develop story and pseudo-interactive gameplay.

If the question is the first and the best, then I haven't answered my first VN, which is Sakura Season. Yes, it's an old VN and I'm very lucky to be able to get a hold a copy of it the very same year it get localized. To be honest, I'm still less than 17 that year (heck, I think I was even less than 10 at that time), so it was illegal for me to play it... but who cares? As a little kid I am, I was hooked by the characters, not the story or the beauty of VN.

I think I also have a copy of SNES Tokimemo copy (Tokimemo is a VN, right?). But it's Japanese so I just mashing buttons at that time, so it couldn't be called as my first VN (besides, I can't remember which is my very first, SNES Tokimemo or Sakura Season).

First VN: Wanko to Kurasou
Best VN: Little Busters! (Clannad had terrible pacing and OMGWTFOTL doesn't count)

My first VN was technically Cute Knight when I was about 15. I had gotten a new laptop and it had a games section, and the trial for Cute Knight was really fun :) I later found out it was made with Ren'py, and then played Ori, Ochi, Onoe; which I never finished.

However lame it might be I actually got into VNs because of the Opening videos of Dote up A Cat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8be8pL0lhw) Makai Tenshi Jibril 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVW0onOgk14) and Cloverpoint (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nlLxtU-3NQ).

As far as goodness, I love Saya No Uta. It scares the crap out of me but at the same times has a really sweet love story. A story with scientific/medical things always fascinates me.

Same here! I love downloading new game previews too, though, most of them aren't shareable due to the hentai in them lol. Still, they can be absolutely beautiful- Cloverpoint's opening almost makes me want to cry because it's so pretty, though, the real op that makes me want to cry is the op for Garden: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-2_JFGy4To
