Changing NVL text box

Hello there,

I just got started on a NVL style game. I want to be able to change the appearance of the text box from time to time. For example, when one character is the narrator it's purple, and when another character is the narrator it's green. I've tried using a different character definition for the narrator and the window_background option but that's meant for ADV and doesn't seem to work. The text boxes just kind of stack on themselves and aren't lined up right. I also found someone who did this using if/else, but I couldn't quite work that either. I could just suck at if/else but I'm hoping someone might be able to explain it to me if that's what I need to do.

I've read lots of tutorials and it all seems to either not work or fly over my head. If the answer is in a page I should have been able to find easily, I apologize.
