speaking on Ren'Py

#1 Post by catherinedevlin »

Hi! I'm brand-new to Ren'Py (but old to Python). Being the fearless type, I volunteered to give an introductory presentation on Ren'Py at Penguicon (http://penguicon.org). Penguicon is a combination SF/open-source convention in Michigan - it's the perfect place for Ren'Py, I think, since it's where otaku and software culture overlap.

Does anybody have any advice for me? Has anybody given a talk on Ren'Py before? Is anybody thinking of coming to Penguicon?

Thanks!

I've given talks about Ren'Py before. In fact, I'll be giving one at Sakuracon in a few weeks.

Fantastic! Are there any materials you could share - slide decks or whatnot? (Actually, writing the presentation IN Ren'Py would be much more cool than a slide deck, wouldn't it?)

That's what I use. I'll be revising my presentation towards the end of the month, and I'll post it here once I'm done.

Thanks, PyTom! That will be a huge help!

Do you mean the end of March? That should do. I don't want to procrastinate any longer than that on my own preparations - my PenguiCon talk is May 1. If the end of the month comes and you still haven't posted, I'll probably nag you for your unfinished version, just so I can get started with something.

You're awesome!

PyTom,

Help! I'm beginning to panic! I really need to write my talk now - I only have three more weeks until presenting it - and it will be so much better if I can draw on materials from the master. Can you post whatever you've got right away, even if it's not revised yet?

Here are the slides for my talk. Unfortunately, they're only barely adequate, because:

- I mostly ad-lib talks.
- This was a talk about Ren'Py development, not an introduction to the form.
- The whole middle part was me demoing Ren'Py by making a game live.
- I didn't really have time to update the game pictures, so I just took a few newer games.

But, here they are.

sakuracon-talk is the slides, which need to be run using Ren'Py.
assets contains the art and music used to make the game.
notes.txt was a printout of the notes I used.

Thank you, PyTom! This is great! I didn't expect a talk-in-a-box, ready to go; but this gives me some great things to work with. Hopefully you'll be seeing some new game-makers from the Michigan/Ohio area in a few months!

Be very careful. I don't think this is a talk-in-a-box, by any means. There's a lot of things that I said at the actual talk that aren't in the slides, or in the notes, so you do need to be sure you know what you need to say about things.

I didn't mean "this is a talk-in-a-box", I meant "this isn't a talk in a box, but that's OK because I never expected or needed that much, just something to start building from". I'll post in May with my results.

Don't worry - I've used Python to destroy the solar system in front of hundreds of witnesses. This will be a piece of cake (thanks to your help).

Wow, I had no idea we had a convention like this in Michigan! It sounds very cool!
(I actually live very close to Troy, so I'll have to try to check it out next year. :D)
Good luck with the presentation!

You mean this year? We're still talking future tense... Penguicon 2010 starts April 30. It would be great to have you there to help me field questions, too!

Thanks again, PyTom! My talk was about half yours and half mine... about 25 people at the session, very receptive and enthusiastic. I'm attaching my slides (just an abbreviation of yours) and a sample game I showed.
