Yeah, I feel like the story moves a bit fast, too. ^^; But I'm not sure what I can add to space it out a little short of rewriting it. If I end up making an RPG version, though, the plot will be longer and more developed, so it shouldn't feel as fast.

The status screen tells you how much of each stat you have, and yes, those stats do have relevance. Not only do they increase your affection with certain love interests, but certain amounts are required to get a "good" ending. But no, there isn't a way to access them other than after each chapter because I didn't know how to add on-screen image buttons, but now that I do...I may be able to come up with some way of linking to that so you can see it any time.

The heart is just a measure of their current affection (based on the Harvest Moon system, if you've played that game xD). The colors go from Black < Blue < Green < Yellow < Red, where black is very little affection and red is head-over-heels in love. Those, too, have relevance because 1) they show you which love interest has more affection for you (which will determine a lot of scenes, especially near the end) and 2) in some cases, you have to have a certain heart level with a love interest in order to view certain scenes and endings.

Hmm...that's an interesting idea, to split it up into multiple parts.
I'd like to avoid that, though, just because I have a lot of not-so-computer-savvy friends who probably wouldn't be able to figure out how to put it back together (...including mysef). xD

As for the backgrounds, I'm sure lots of people have used them. ^^;; The music, too. I relied heavily on the OELVN Community resources because they were easier to obtain (and cheaper since they're...you know...free) than trying to commission all that stuff.

Well, I actually started planning the game long before I ever learned about Ren'py, and I had it set up in a forum like this using hyperlinked images as the choice buttons and putting a chapter per page with a header at the top. In this version, it was all story with no "action periods," stats, or personality choices. I started that process about a year/year and a half ago. After finishing about half of it, I put the project on hold because I wanted to make it into a Flash game, but I couldn't figure out how to use Flash. Then, this summer, I was looking around and found Ren'py. So the process of then turning everything into code and then finishing up most of the writing took about a month and a half of pretty much straight coding (as in, sometimes I would go for days without eating or sleeping and just code all day). I worked off and on a bit once school started (and once my character art was completed) to finally finish it up completely.
So...short answer would be a year and a half, off and on.

As far as staff, it was just me. ^^; My character and scene artists worked separately on commission; they weren't involved in the actual process of making the game at all. So I did all the writing, coding, testing, editing, and designing the game graphics as mentioned in the first post.

I believe I found a bug. While I was nearing the end on Chael's route, trying to defeat Nefferon with my intellect, the game suddenly crashed. This popped up.

I'm sorry, but an uncaught exception occurred.

Oh, heh.
As I was going through and replacing "int" with "chm" (that's how I keep track of the different personalities), I must have been tired and replaced it there, too. xP

It'll be fixed in the next update. Thanks for pointing that out.

That was fun~ I gotten 2 endings so far, good and bad ending with Chael.



I was originally worried if 407 MB is going to worth my time (My connection is very slow, took about 6 hours to download this), but I must say I am pleased with what I get. Thank you for the game. ^^

Oh, yeah for the stuff you asked:

- Is the story entertaining? Is there enough plot development?
Yes. I enjoy it very much.

- Are the characters memorable? Are they too cliche?
Yes. I think they are interesting characters. I won't say they are original though.

- Is the dialogue/narration too immature and/or childish for such serious subject matter?
Actually I think they are quite well balanced.

- What do you specifically like or dislike about the game?
I listed it already above.

- Would you be interested in an RPG version of this game, expanding on the same general plot line but delving into more detail and focusing less on the romance aspect?
Well, I do interested in the plot more than romance, but I am not sure about RPG version of this. I like RPG, but very few indie RPG caught my interest. It's specially hard to make an interesting battle system. But if you have some grand plan, I won't stop you from making one~ XD

- How important is being able to enter your own name for the character?
I am not interested in naming characters. But I know some people like doing so. Maybe adding it as option is a good idea?

- What other types of customizations would you like to see? Would they substantially increase your enjoyment of the game?
I am not fan of customization either. Since I don't like sim all that much. But I know Sim is more popular than VN, so feel free to ignore me ^^;

- How important are fancy graphics (i.e. custom game menus, buttons, image maps, etc.)? What attracts you the most to a new game - the game graphics, the character art, or the storyline/character descriptions?
The point is not fancy, the point is that whether they look nice on eye and they function properly. I personally prefer something clean and neat layout. So yes, simple layout will do fine. As for graphic, I like some consistency. I like pretty graphic, but I don't like it if it's not consistent.

As for what attract me the most in a game... well, all kind of things I guess. Sometimes it's the graphic, other times the story. Sometimes other people comments about the game may help to increase my interest.

On the bright side, it turns out that most of the file size was due to the high-framerate (or something) .mp3 files I was using, so my lowering the quality of those a bit, I decreased the game size considerably. I'll be uploading the updated version shortly...I'm just sorry that I didn't finish it until after you took all that time to download it. ^^;;;

As for the backgrounds/music being used elsewhere...yeah, I know. ^^; Like I said, I relied heavily on the resources from the OELVN Community Wiki 'cause I'm cheap. xD;

And as for the difference between the character sprites and scenes...yes, I know that's a bit of a problem. I at least asked my scene artist to adjust them a little so that the outfit colors match, but she's kind of MIA at the moment, hence why I can't fully release the game yet. ^^;

I tried to access the demo on Mediafire, but instead of a download link, all I saw was a small blue square. Maybe the site was down... I will try again later.

Also, I tried to search the web for "memoirs of an angel." The search results were dominated by the title of a Mariah Carey album...

It certainly wasn't my intention to copy the name...I didn't even know such an album existed. But the game has a diary/journal kind of feel to it, and it's obviously about an angel, so I thought "Memoirs of an Angel" would be a good name. It could've been "Memoirs of a Princess," but that doesn't sound nearly as cool. >.>

But hey, if anyone comes up with a better name that doesn't have connections to pop singers in their underwear (referring to her album cover), I'll be happy to implement it. C:
