Re: Floating Frame Director style in Ren'py?

#16 Post by mossmess »

Heya everyone.

I'm keen to see this floating frame thing happen, so attached to this post are some cheap and nasty oval speech bubble pngs in a zip file. It's a start :)

Attached is also a preview for those who are interested but not interested enough to actually download the zip.

Are these helpful at all?

I'd imagine there'd be some scaling/stretching issues with them as they have outlines. They might also be too small or too big. I'm happy to change them or make more variations. I could also supply the original vector file if you want. Just let me know.

Mossmess, your simple bubbles inspired me to create some more typical looking bubbles:

Image
(all bubbles are the same size. The thumbnails just scale them according to what can fit into the thumbnail square)

* They come in two flavours, 'simple' and 'tapered'; and 8 directions
* The tapered style is used in the main bubble above. The non-tapered style has a uniformly thick outline, and is easier to edit.
* I haven't rendered them to PNG, because I don't know what size is appropriate.
Loading them into GIMP and then exporting, is the easiest way to do this.
* I suspect that we actually need a component based system (at least breaking into bubble vs 'arrow-bit'. In the case of thought bubbles, possibly a separate component for each mini bubble leading to the main bubble, depending on style)

Now if Pytom get it RSN, we have a new and powerful use of Ren'py: making digital Manga/Comic :)

Best regards from Italy,

The asymmetrical frames coming in 6.13 might be useful.

Hi - Very sorry for bringing up an old thread, but I'm wondering if this functionality has been added to Ren'py? If not can someone recommend anything else?

Someone pointed out Quartett? and that is exactly what I would like to do. I noticed on the title page under the title it says Powered by floating frame director. Is floating frame director a program?

Wow, hardcore necromancy. But look at PyTom being such a doll! So helpful!

I doubt Ren'py will get any kind of official visual editor anytime soon. This kind of thing is not too hard to do if you know how to make text boxes and ATL transforms. You could even animate them like a motion manga. Of course, using it for a full length visual novel isn't recommended, but then again, it would be really hard to make a digital manga as long as a visual novel.

The comic bubbles do give me an idea about spicing up cutscenes, though. I might make a cookbook recipe of how to add comic strip text if I can get it working.
