...I was hoping for something better than random name generators T_T

I tried the last one. Turning on adult content and running with the dictionary gets me a lot of unsexy phrases involving vaginas.

Anyway, I'll guess I'll just use the rngs at least as placeholders so I can talk about characters properly.

Sometimes it's best to get some random input than just go off of your own brain. You'll end up using saturated or names you just saw but don't realize it. Meaning, if you're naming a bunch of Japanese characters and you just watched an anime, the names in it will either directly influence what names you pick or don't pick, whether you know it or not. Having a random generator will seed things that your brain doesn't already have a bias against, and that's a GOOD thing.

That said, I don't do all my naming via randomness. Nor do I take the first name given to me. There's still a fine selection process involved. And when it comes to fantasy settings, I do it Tolkein style. Get a loose understanding of the fake language and see what kind of names using it will make.

If you absolutely have to have a character that's known by one name to some characters and by a different name to other characters, perhaps using a side image (character portrait that sits next to the dialogue box) would sidestep or at least clarify the issue. Generally though, Aleema said it: avoid confusing the reader at all costs.
