Visual Novels For Android

#1 Post by SusanTheCat »

I just got my "new to me" android tablet. It runs Android 2.2. I was able to install Ren'py and ran Moonlight Walks and my games on it.

Now I want to play some more Visual Novels on it!

Do you know of any visual novels that are playable on Android?

VNs on my phone would be rad, which is why I had attempted to port one of my VNs to Android. Sadly, I can make neither heads nor tails of the mumbo jumbo related to it.

Thankfully, it will be far easier a week from now.

That sounds exciting. You said earlier you thought of making it paid support - have you decided whether it'll be a free feature or a paid one?

It will be free.

My current plans - always subject to change - are that any pay component for Ren'Py would target end-users, rather than developers. (For example, a Ren'Py shop, or charging for excess save-synchronization space.)

But I was wondering if devs can publish the games under their Android publisher account/name? (I am not sure exactly how it works, I only used the iOS appstore before)

I am now super tempting to root my tablet so I can get Android Market on it :( my discount tablet doesn't have it. (But there are lots of sites that tell you how to root it. )

Jack, yes. You'll have to pay the $25 "I'm a real person" fee, and then you can just upload the game.

SusanTheCat - not sure if it will work or not. Ren'Py requires OpenGL ES 2, which may not be supported on cheaper devices.

OpenGL ES 2 is specific to an Android version? or depends on the hardware? I might be buying an Android tablet in next months too :)

I'm glad I got a cheap tablet for Christmas (seriously, it's something from China called an "A-Pad" or something like that XD). My cellphone couldn't even handle downloading and installing Broken Hearted. Looking forward to seeing more visual novels on the marketplace!

Android supports OpenGL ES 2 since version 2.0. In my experience, any tablet running version 2.2 or better that isn't frustratingly sluggish has the hardware for it.

One thing that sucks: the emulator still doesn't support Open GL ES 2.0, so you have to have a physical device for your tests.
Keep your script in your Dropbox folder.
It allows you to share files with your team, keeps backups of previous versions, and is ridiculously easy to use.

Thanks. Well the prices have fallen down (at least here) so I can get a decent tablet for under 200eur, which is an acceptable investment (if I think an iPad2 costs 400+ euros!)

Out of curiosity, would such a Ren'Py shop be able to support DLC, if someone wanted to go that route?

Say no, say no, say no :D. Goddamn DLC.

It would be fun to see more VNs for Android :D! Though I wonder when the size limit for uploading directly on the Android market site gets bigger than 30 MB - is that even still going to happen?

If we didn't have a god for compression and nuked the HD option, I doubt Firefly would have been below the limit, and aren't Ren'Py games quite big too?
