Hey! So I need a logo. The name is 'Angelwing' and beside it there needs to be a young girl who's just released a butterfly from her hands, with a Labrador sitting beside her. It can only be a maximum of 4 colours. It will be used for what is expected to be a nationally known award that's to be given out in Indiana in the memory of Shanda Sharer. At first I was thinking...how on earth am I going to manage this? But then I remembered there are so many talented people here on this board, and of course you will be credited for your design! Thank you so much, hopefully at least one of you will come up with something amazing!

UPDATE
We were finally able to get a logo! Thank you to anyone who may have been interested. Also, if you'd like to learn more about our company or the story mentioned above, make sure to watch the upcoming documentary titled 'Charlie's Scars', which will be released soon! Thanks again.

I have questions:

-When do you need it done by?
-Is there money involved?
-What are the uses going to be? (Print, Web, Large scale, small scale, clothing etc)

Also, that is really complicated for a logo. It generally goes against design theory. Does it have to be what you said? What is the reason for it?

Is it really that complicated? Could you have something like the logo that Key had for Air - take the girl and the dog and the butterfly and put them in silhouette, so it's not that overbearing. IIRC, the Lab is a recognizable enough dog that you could probably represent it fairly specifically in silhouette, as long as you did so from the side.

Well, that's enough backseat design from me.

Key's logo is pretty simple. Short word, single silhouette, everything in scale (granted I don't know why they have the girl there at all. It works just fine with type and the nice bird/curve element). If you had a girl + a dog + a butterfly + the wording, things get complicated fast. Plus, given scale it wouldn't take much for the butterfly to disappear (I'm not so much worried about the dog). Logos are all about simplicty and carefully controlling how you you communicate. Spelling stuff out for people with pictures is bad form for a logo. The more elements you add the harder you make it to read, which can defeat the purpose of a logo to begin with. It's one of those things where less is more.

Er... if this is possible:

Then so is that.

You'll just have to find a good composition for it to work, but I don't think it's impossible.

Try shrinking it done to 5mm height and see how good it looks. That's an image, not a logo. The type would be the logo. Also the picture is unlikely to be a vector and most logos have to be vectors because of the way they are used. Simplicty and versatility are key to logos and any designer worth their salt will tell you so.

That said, yes the logo could be done. Any of that stuff can be done. And someone could probably make it look good. But I would say there would be limitations of what the uses could be. The question then becomes why are you doing it? My main point was why there had to be a dog, a girl and a butterfly and if there was a better way of communicating what they wanted. It's what design is all about.

Yes! It can absolutely be simple, I'm just giving a basic idea of what we're looking for! A butterfly is definitely needed in the logo, and at least hands letting it go would be desired. There'd be no money though, since my family does run a non-profit, I need volunteer work (I know, lame-.-). But the case of Shanda is infamous, and the fact that it's suddenly being brought back into the light is slowly starting to spread around, so this logo will most likely be seen by numerous people around the country, and whoever draws it will be credited. Silhouette are also perfectly fine, and that's what I'd been trying to do actually...but my lack of artistic skill shows -.- If someone could do this though I can assure you my family would be very grateful ^.^ Shanda's mother will ultimately be the one to pick which design she likes the most. I have several, but they all stink -.-
Also, to hopefully give you all a better idea of what we're looking for; the basic story is that when Shanda died, at her funeral there were many young children present, and because her death had been so horrific the man giving the speech had to use a metaphor. He used Shanda's favorite animal, a butterfly, and told everyone to close their eyes and imagine they all had a beautiful butterfly in their hands...then when they opened their eyes they had to let it go. Shanda was just like the butterflies, basically. A beautiful story, and that's what we're trying to capture in the logo. Since we're donating dogs in her memory though, a dog could also be nice, but all and any ideas are welcomed and very much appreciated!
And about the time; it'd be best to have a definite decision on the logo in about 1-2 weeks, so it's not something that has to be finished in a day or anything. If you'd like to send some ideas, feel free to pm me ^.^ Hopefully this answers all the questions!

I know, it's the no money part, but I mean...it's for kids with autism. >.< Can no one help me just to be nice and charitable? :D haha probably not. It's cool though, I'll try to do it myself! :> But if you are interested, just email me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns :)

I would give it a go, but I seriously doubt I'm going to have time. Plus, I'm not that familar with the story and now I'm just confused at how it relates to Autism o.o Good luck with it though.

haha, well dogs help to calm down children with autism. They can also help open doors and do other common things for them, as well as make sure they don't run away or get out of control. So we have a program in Indiana, where women prisoners train them for the autistic children. The rest is just a very long story. But yes, I totally understand, thanks anyway! ^.^
