IIRC, the limit is currently 50MB. It's up to the developer to figure out how to get under that size, until Google comes up with a blessed way of doing it.

How does one break the rest of the package into an archive file?

There are three practical limits.
  • The Android market limit (50MB)
  • Free internal memory (even if you set installLocation to preferExternal, it's installed to the internal memory first)
  • Download cache size on Samsung devices (30MB)

That feature was promised, but it never actually happened.

I haven't seen a game that uses this feature yet. They still download the remaining assets from the developer's server to the SD card when the user starts for the first time. There are advantages to this approach: if you, as a developer, wants to correct a bug, you don't have to force the user to download the whole thing again from scratch. And if you are doing DLC, you will probably need some mechanism like this anyway.

Personally, I think DLC opens all kinds of interesting opportunities. Discoverability in the Android Market is absolutely awful, so a "portal" application that let users download new VNs (free and paid) would definitely be welcome. Another possibility is selling games in episodes, assuming the story allows this kind of structure. The only thing I think you wouldn't be able to do with DLC is get around the Market's strict no pornography rule to sneak in eroge.

They released it now:

Up to 4GB in expansion files, and it looks like it won't be a huge pain to implement.

I saw that this morning.

Since the expansion file can be of any format, I'm thinking that it will likely make sense to make it a .rpa file, and automatically add those .rpa files to the list of paths that Ren'Py will automatically look at.

It will be interesting to see if the Amazon App Store and other markets add this in a compatible way. Otherwise, we'll have to have two versions of each app - a small APK + data files for Google, and a big APK for everyone else. (IIRC, Amazon already allows for a big APK file.)

But that way you can only change assets, so not really update game code?
(I'm still hoping to see also a simple autoupdater for the desktop version of Ren'Py :D)

The goal is more to allow for big games, than to make updates easier. The market makes updates reasonably easy, anyway.

But even for the updates this is a win. Users only have to download the APK with the new code, instead of downloading a huge APK with all the game assets.

This just in.

Not that I particularly care for PayPal, but somehow, the current attempts of the big players to monopolize certain features strike a bad note with me. What do the devs think?

Well any attempt like that is bad, but I think is inevitable. Apple showed the way with the iOS, and now everyone is following.
To be honest, I think it's not a big problem if you need to use their payments for their devices - it's much worse when they want to force the appstores for "supposedly free" platforms like Windows and Mac.
The day you can't sell direct on desktop computers anymore, it will be a sad day (also I'll wonder what's the difference between a computer and a console, if you have so many restrictions? lol).

From what I can tell, Google isn't banning alternative payment options. They're enforcing their existing rule that Android market apps must handle all payments through the Android market. If you circumvent the market's payment methods, Google doesn't get its cut.

Yes true, something you can't do for iOS, unless you hack your phone (something not really nice lol)

There's a huge difference between Android and iOS. On Android, you can just upload a package file, and none of the market's requirements apply to you. There are alternative markets, like Amazon's, as well.

This is a huge difference compared to iOS, where you basically can't do that - at least not without Apple's approval.

Yeah, I also think they're much less restrictive regarding content. Maybe not porn or hentai, but sexy/nudity seems to be OK ? While browsing the market on the asus tablet, I saw many ambiguous stuff
