As a fairly logical person I don't plan on adding any art to my project til much later, but one thing I want to know if there is any certain style needed.
I can't draw humans normally to save my life and I defiantly can't draw anime-esque characters.
What I can do though are chibi characters...I'm pretty confident in that and love drawing those type of characters...
As consumers would you mind seeing a visual novel with only chibi characters? or would it bother you?

Nanolife, a VN that was released recently, uses all chibi sprites and a lot of people enjoyed it. I'm sure there are other games that have done the same, but that one springs to mind the quickest. So I don't think people mind if a VN has only chibi characters.

There's no one style for visual novels. You can make a visual novel with any plot or art style that you want to. There aren't any strict visual novel guidelines out there or a VN police force that will gun you down for doing something supposedly "unusual." As a consumer, I wouldn't mind seeing a VN with only chibi characters. It wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I just need a decent story to draw me in, then I'll play it.

I'm not really a fan of chibis, but I'm generally okay with them. I usually don't mind the artwork so long as its quality is within a tolerable range, but it's going to need a good/decent story to keep me hooked to it.

Fact is that art is an important part of visual novels. Obviously, good art will make it much more enjoyable. However, it's all about balance. So if your art is unusual, people will generally enjoy it anyway if the writing is good enough to draw the reader in despite the art.

Other than that, chibis are perfectly fine. Of course, it also depend on what kind of visual novel you want to do. The story has to fit the art style somehow. So if you only use chibis, a hentai game or an otome where you talk about rippling muscles and whatnot probably won't work. Long story short, if the story is about as cute as your chibi art, go for it. And if it's not...go for it anyway. Or get yourself an artist.
Whatever, just do the best you can. People here will appreciate it, because they can see that you put your heart in it. :)

Certain art styles are more popular here than others (I've only seen a few comments that state "art style X doesn't work for VNs"), but I've not seen any particularly harsh criticism for chibi art. Fans of chibi art will more than likely play your VN (unless the story summary turns them off)..

Poorly done hand drawn art is still poorly done art. Be a Poser (or better yet, use DAZ Studio 3D) - dare to be different.
