Does anyone have any tips for coloring backgrounds? I'm also not sure if I should go with a watercolored-style background or a cell-shaded one with graphics similar to these...?

What I am thinking - and it is only a theory - is that a watercolor-style background would look lovely with this sprites, but that you would want to tone down the saturation quite a bit since the colors on your sprites are brighter, and might clash with bright backgrounds. I would love to see these characters interacting in a nearly-grayscale environment.

By the way, I REALLY love this character. Her hair, her face, those glasses, that lackadaisical expression... I think she's absolutely adorable. I want to see more of her!

Oh yeah, and I also figured out what style your art reminds me of - have you ever seen Code Lyoko? The character designs for that show have a similar facial stylization (although personally, I think your take on it is much nicer :)).

Dang! I really love the way you colored her hair. It's so detailed. xD

Finally done with one of Asher's sprites. I wonder if I should make his hair lighter...it's supposed to be a light gray in the original sketch, but I'm not sure if I like it better than way.

It took me 4 hours to do the toning alone and 3 hours to do the sketch and lineart. A videogame giveaway happened and said that the poster will pick whichever illustration s/he liked, best drawn or not. So I made this:

But then I lost to last minute entries of this as the Grand Prize Winner and this as runner-up. I know my entry is not anatomically perfect, but I felt like the best I did was outdo those that were hastily done on MS Paint :( Oh well... whatever the poster fancied I guess. And how do I put in pictures without the attachment box surrounding it? It's pretty jarring especially when I need to make my WIP nice and clean.

Yeah... the thing about those "Whatever I like best" contests is that they're entirely subjective, not based on consideration of the effort put in or the artistic merit or anything. Maybe the poster just really liked turtles, or was drawn to the color. It sucks, but that's how it is...

Even in art galleries and stuff, the judges have their own personal tastes, so you could submit a fantastic piece and not get accepted because while it might be awesome, it's not along the same lines of thing that they are looking for. Similarly with novels, also... you could be the second coming of Dostoevsky but if you submitted your work to Harlequin they would turn their nose up at you!

Anyway, it sucks but try not to take it too hard. It doesn't mean you don't have talent. :)

I had the same thing happen to me with a forum related drawing contest some years ago. I didn't even get in the top three. A bunch of mspaint pictures did. Later I learned that the creators of the mspaint pictures hung out in the 500+ page thread constantly chatting with the owner, so in reality they put in more effort than i did to win.

Though isn't that second one a disney horse trace? >_>

@maltagiati-thanks. I really like. Your art its cute and his hair is nice
@twisted-eva - sucks you didn't win because yours is better but sometimes art is subjective or judges arnt fair. Your anatomy needs improving but the attention to details is good.

Yeah, the owner said s/he drew a horse from Disneyland (what?). I don't know about if it was traced because I don't remember if there was a horse like that.

That there's the horse from Disney's "Tangled."

I'm sorry about what happened, but I guess like everyone said, I think it was the judge picks/fav. They didn't really view the hardwork you've done, instead picking some to their own liking.
To make yourself happy, think like this; You've done your best. You know your entry is far impressive than the winner's. Atleast you learned along the progress, and was able to make a beautiful work.

Also for your question, most of us link the image directly instead of uploading it here (not me, I'm a bit lazy.) from Photobucket and such.

*pats back* Don't be discouraged! I've noticed that some forum contests tend to have 'special rules', which basically just translates to bias or wacky results. I've had the same thing happen to me once, slaved two days away on this and basically lost to a... Screenshot. In fact, another friend and I who joined, were accused of art thievery. orz

Cheer up, feel better, and have some ice-cream! I mean, the grand prize winner is a tortoise - there's no doubting the judgement is skewed.
