I'm working on my first VN and my writing style is more like that of a novel's style than playwright.
My question is how do you write vocal tone in speech for a VN.
In a book you would write "I love you", she says bitterly with a glare in her eye.
How would you write that or things along that nature in a VN since the descriptive is not in the vocal text.

Well there are many ways to say ''I love you'' in the style you want it, but one of the many ways is to do it like this...

#1 is the narrative, #2 is the girl...

1. She has a bitter glare in her eyes.
2. ''I love you!''
(1. That was, surprising...)

Another way is to have a character sprite of the girl in which she looks bitterly, and then she says ''I love you.''

she "I love you."
"She said it bitterly and with a glare in her eye."

Guess you could try some things out and let some people test it? =o
(Maybe search some descriptive VNs.)

Well, or just with graphics.
It is a visual novel, after all.

I do plan to do more research on other VN's to see more clearly how it is done in other cases, if I can find them. I thank both of you for your replies. I know the graphics will play heavily on attempting to show tone. I guess I am just looking for ways to show tones and actions that are tied to spoken words. Character does something as they say it or says it with a tone that can't be visually shown.

Yes, that's true. >_<
I use a colour changing textbox to make it a little more clear (my game is rather dialogue heavy than descriptive as I'm using speech bubbles), but that's also not the perfect way.
(You could, of course, also use NVL or whatever it's called - this way, it's more like a novel with pictures than pictures with some bits of a novel.)

I do plan to use NVL at times, although I am currently hoping to get around using it for the majority of the project. Thanks for that suggestion as that I wasn't sure what it was called and that led me to the code to use it the way I initially intended. :D
