And really, the older comics I've seen - or the cheaper ones - are still perfectly readable and workable in English. I mean, back in the '20s they didn't have the benefit of modern methods and frequently didn't have high-quality materials, and that was more or less when English-language comics first sprang to prominence. The Spirit was printed on newsprint, possibly the crappiest mass-printed media ever, and that worked well enough...
Still, a demo shouldn't be too hard to knock up in Ren'Py just using prefab images for all the balloons - if I don't see anything by the time I've got the time spare I'll have a go, see how it looks.
