...except there are thousands of English-language webcomics which work perfectly well, produced explicitly for the screen.

And really, the older comics I've seen - or the cheaper ones - are still perfectly readable and workable in English. I mean, back in the '20s they didn't have the benefit of modern methods and frequently didn't have high-quality materials, and that was more or less when English-language comics first sprang to prominence. The Spirit was printed on newsprint, possibly the crappiest mass-printed media ever, and that worked well enough... ;-)

Still, a demo shouldn't be too hard to knock up in Ren'Py just using prefab images for all the balloons - if I don't see anything by the time I've got the time spare I'll have a go, see how it looks. ;-)
(I can't download Monele's Quartett flash, it keeps dropping out, so I can't see what that is... :/ )

I wanted to take a look at Monele's links too, but some don't seem to respond.

Here's a Megaupload link for Quartett Bulles :

Are there other non-working links?... Everything else are videos either on Youtube or Dailymotion... I could transfer them from one to the other if someone has a problem viewing them (or just put them on Megaupload too).

As it happens, I managed to get that one downloaded in the end, I just had to wait 'til four in the morning and try again. ;-)

And yeah, impressive. And it certainly looks like it works well to me.

Watching it made me wonder about auto-positioning each bubble in a circle around the head of whoever's speaking, now... ;-)
