Lady Sugarplum's Bad Day

#1 Post by mrsulu »

Hello! Welcome to Lady Sugarplum's Bad Day!

This is a short (5-10min) comedy about two children's TV show hosts. One is a buxom blonde named Marie St. Marie, freshly hired and very friendly. The other is an excitable chipmunk puppet named Miss Bandit who has been on the show for years. With her boss out of town, Bandit has cooked up something...special for Marie today.

This is NOT FOR KIDS!

This game contains some NSFW dialog and art. Be warned. It's rated "OT" on the manga scale, PG13 on the MPAA scale, and Extremely Silly on the MrSulu scale.

It contains puzzles (not slider puzzles, but normal ones), a word game, original music, 72 pictures, 1421 words, 198 screens of dialog.

I loved this. I thought it was for kids... but it wasn't really. I think the finale's verbal attacks were a bit too much, but all in all, it was a lot of fun - the puzzles were nice and as I said about Real Life - the fact that it's (save for the music, I assume) bespoke makes it really great. And Marie is really (don't usually say this word in this context)... hot. A very pleasant surprise - but then it would be, since I didn't follow any threads on this. Keeping yourself in the dark has its advantages.

Congratulations!

Me too. ;-)

The puzzles were pretty cool, for that matter - it took a second to realise how the controls worked, but in the end it was pretty nicely useable. Not to mention that the images usually didn't turn out quite how I was first expecting, which was a nice touch.

I should clarify. One of the music loops was totally generic and did not come with an author to attribute. I used two other songs and "Scheming Weasel" from Kevin MacLeod's great music site incompetech.com. Then my wife (Lt. Uhura) did some new arrangements of Scheming Weasel's theme so I could have some different moods.

Yeah, it's not for kids. :) I'm glad you like it!

I dunno, I'm much more of a Miss Bandit fan.

This one is pure gold! Congratulations on the art, the writing and the composition. We need more comedy pieces in the community.

And here I thought this was a kid's game...LOL

Have to say this was REALLY well done...it's pretty obvious that
Miss Bandit does NOT like Marie and makes a point of humilitaing her
and really thought the diaglouge was great. This was a true gem, great for a lot of laughs =)

Dropped a poopie in my eye

I really enjoyed this - the presentation was brilliant :). No-one else seems to have any love for Mr Whistles? - not that I'd pay him for ...
*hopes for more works that are rated extremely silly on the mrsulu scale*

I thought Mr. Whistles was great...just hard to tell what he's thinking...I got the impression he's kind of like the *straight man* of the 3...which is interesting, considering he's the clown!

And yes, we need more works that are rated extremely silly on the mrsulu scale!

Can we mirror this on the Ren'ai archives?

Sure, you can post this on the Ren'ai archives. You should post a link back to the blog, http://banditscorner.blogspot.com, plus some of these screenshots, I guess. It doesn't really have a permanent home right now. Is there some way I can track downloads there?

I wanted to wait until it was out there before I said anything about what I was thinking when I wrote it. Basically, I wanted to try three things: super-fast pace, real puzzles, and lots of art. I thought if I kept the size down (fast pace), use code to fill up extra interaction (real puzzles), I could make a very art-rich experience during the VN parts, yet finish the entire project in a month.

Hah.

In truth, I think the pace worked all right and the puzzles worked (although I tended to make them easy so as not to derail the player), but the art was just brutal. Bandit has something like 10 poses, Marie 8, and even Mr. Whistles got 6, plus 5 CGs. I did the entire thing in pencils and realized afterwards that color was basically mandatory, and my project schedule quadrupled.

I have the greatest respect now for all creators, but art-heavy ones in particular. It takes a lot more gumption to finish this sort of thing than I thought.

But I'm glad you all like it! It's just what you can hope for when you're working on something for so long.

As it goes, PyTom suggested just the other day that he's installed Google Analytics, which would make this easier. Although I suspect it still means asking for the data from Tom; I don't see anything in the admin interface to check that data even.

(Samu-kun isn't around, so I'll add this now. And thanks! ;-) )
