Renpy in 3D?

#1 Post by DaFool »

I know it sounds absurd for our mostly 2D games, but what if a renpy game outputs a phase- adjusted second image either side by side or a separate screen? I'm sure 3D monitors and video cards will become more common.

I would have thought that it would be worth not doing something this until said devices really do become commonplace, since when they do there'll probably be a convenient hardware-agnostic API to program against...

(Although I believe that present-day 3D PC hardware generally takes its 3D information from an OpenGL or DirectX pipeline which includes depth information, so I guess maybe if Ren'Py 6.11 uses a 'deep' orthogonal GL projection and includes the zorder of sprites as actual depth information, you might get it for free anyway. Not that most existing games using zorder will be carefully managing their distances, but new games written to be displayed in 3D would be able to).
