They are called abandonwares instead, since the maker either stops getting money from it(Publishing it, selling it etc) or they are disbanded. You can regard them as freewares, however, if one group decides to take the copyright, then they are no longer considered abandonware.

Well, abandonware is really a euphemism for pirated software that's no longer in wide circulation. With regards to copyrights and ownership, the statuses are generally no different than those of the latest games (The Underdogs hosts games that're not protected by ESA, although they also comply with the wishes of other publishers who complain).

Therefore, abandonware is no closer to freeware than a newly downloaded copy of Heroes of Might & Magic V. However, some people will argue that there're fewer ethical issues associated with it (provided that players buy the games when and if they're reprinted or ported to modern platforms). Others argue that it is better to propagate these games than to allow them to fade into obscurity. In that way, gaming history can be preserved even if it's through piracy.

While I'm not familiar with copyright legislation, I do know that abandonware is sometimes as much as encouraged py publishers... although by doing that, I suppose it's no longer considered abandonware. With that said, here are a few great games that fit the bill.

One Must Fall 2097 - A great old PC fighter, if you've never heard of it. I loved it as a kid.

Grand Theft Auto 1 & 2

The Elder Scrolls: Arena

As for other free games, these two links should keep you occupied until, like, forever.
