You mentioned English teachers. That's usually where things go wrong. English teachers teach creative writing, which is a different beast altogether from writing. Using "therefore" instead of "so", and then a synonym of it as much as possible may make your text more "exciting" to read, but I'd be very tired, or should I say, I'd be exhausted by the end of your novel if you did it wherever possible. Sometimes, reading short words is nice.
