Ladies, about the lack of "hentai" scenes with fem prtgnist
I have been wondering about this a few times on my own but never got to ask around for opinions. This is more a question for the female VN players. So, girls, what's your take on the fact that all the games initially designed for the male audience have hentai scenes and all those awesome nude CGs? There ain't that stuff in games with a female protagonist, most likely because everyone expects girls to be somehow more innocent than men... oh please.
I have a few projects I've been working on and off on my own for several years, and I had thought about including hentai scenes in my game. Hentai scenes, for the ladies! It's still not hacked into stone, it's just something I've been thinking about. If I did include it, I would most likely aspire to make it an optional feature. In the game where it would be included, it would take place on a long romance route, eventually.
But what's the general lead on this? Would it be needed, or wanted? Unnecessary, waste of time? Maybe just irrelevant? (I mean who doesn't want to see their favorite hero nude...)
Looking forward to your opinions to increase my knowledge on the VN audiences and creators opinions!

Are you inquiring about vn's in general or adult vn's? There are plenty of games that have adult situations with a female lead. Queen at Arms is one game that comes to mind though you do play as a woman pretending to be a boy and the scenes there aren't graphic.
There's also that Nano Game that came out two years ago with the Incubi who have a one night stand with the female lead. That was a little more adult even though they portrayed it as giving you control on how far you'd let it go. It was still graphic scenes.
Now that I think about it there are more then a handful of the types of games that have female leads with sex in it. Graphic depending on the writers and if it has any merit to the story. Most good writers cut out physical romance if it doesn't advance the plot in some way. I realize this is not in the Adult Creator Discussion so I'll leave it at that.

Although they don't seem to be a huge niche, Japan has its fair share of R18 otome, and even more R18 drama CDs (I seriously don't get standalone drama CDs, porn or otherwise, but to each their own). EVNs do seem to have a distinct lack of R18 otome, although I don't know the reason.
For me, sex scenes are very hit-or-miss. If the writing isn't excellent it becomes a cringy mess, and as for nudity, I don't really find male genitals aesthetically pleasing so the amount we see in fanservice-y scenes with swimsuits and the sort is enough. Of course there are gals out there who disagree, but at least for me, it's either great writing or no sex at all.

This is exactly it I think. I've played my fair share of awkward games with male protags that have cringy awkward sex scenes but I can completely overlook it because it's not meant for me and somehow that makes me cringe less, but when a sex scene is meant for me to enjoy and its a cringefest it will disengage me from the story in a split second and I will skip past it as quickly as possible if not just put the thing down entirely.rito wrote:If the writing isn't excellent it becomes a cringy mess...
I have no problem with sex scenes, in fact I very much enjoy the sex scenes in romance novels and romance novels are a popular genre so it isn't to say that players don't want sex scenes with a female protag, it's just that they need to be done well or not at all. I would say it would probably be worth your time to heavily beta test any sex scenes and make sure that the readers aren't put out by them.

I don't need hentai scenes, but I don't mind them either. I just wish the girls were willing to have sex, and the focus was on the LI. Every Japanese 18+ otome I've played felt like it was made for straight dudes - forceful sex, CGs with full body naked MC on the foreground and a tiny bit of the fully clothed LI somewhere in the background.
Like, I don't want to look at "myself" while having sex. Gimme all the male genitalia!

Re: Ladies, about the lack of "hentai" scenes with fem prtgn
maybe women like to imagine it over see it? Romance novels have a lot of graphic sex in them (not all but... yeah a ton). without illustrations and they sell better than any other genre of mass market novels (I learned this working at a book store lol)
then there is yaoi/BL manga and stuff so there are def women who like seeing male genitalia.
Part of it could be that the bulk of the audience is assumed to be under 18? Not sure how accurate the assumption is though

I wouldn't mind seeing more female-oriented 18+ content in VNs. Scribbles mentioned the popularity of romance novels...I don't necessarily think it's because women prefer imagining it. Written novels seem to be more readily available than OELVNs with such content, so perhaps it's not entirely a matter of choice so much as it is a medium with a wider range of options. But I have little experience on this subject.

Ladykiller in a Bind has Hentai scenes with a female protagonist.
Fenoxo's Hentai games allow you to choose the gender of your protagonist.
Coming Out On Top is a gay dating sim, but written by a woman and lots of women like gay male hentai.
I have never really figured out how to use vndb to filter for multiple criteria, but you might figure out how to get "female protagonist" and "adult content."

I like adult otome games! (There's many of them but there should be more. A lot of them are bad.....) It'd not be a waste of time at all if you make one...... it's just two different audiences, some who like adult games and some who don't. I think it's a good idea to have the hentai scenes be optional since then you can target more different types of players.
My biggest pet peeve with otome games is when everything's all "Hey, I just met you... and this is crazy... but you are my everything! I've never met someone like you! I can't live without you! Kiss me, baby! We're getting married tomorrow!"
I prefer actually getting to know the characters and getting to have meaningful interactions with them before we start confessing our love and, um, other stuff..... It's fine if you have a flirty character where the entire point is that they're easy to get with though..... but if every single character falls in love with me at first sight and declares their eternal love, I'm closing the game.... (lol)

They are out there, you just got a hang around different scenes. I think the mainstream stereotype of hentai games just overshadows other genres because that's what people think of.
Unless you are talking about games from Japan. Then it's a whole other culture and censorship discussion I am not qualified to explain. lol

I know right! I dislike those types of games as well. Too many lost puppies is a little overwhelming and leave you confused because it's like okay what's the catch.morrie wrote:..... but if every single character falls in love with me at first sight and declares their eternal love, I'm closing the game.... If you want to include sex scenes in your girl x boy visual novel, then I'm interested. I want to know more about other people's perspectives.
If you're a writer or illustrator, then think about "how do I want to portray sex in this story?" Maybe you want to present it through just text. (There's a VNDB tag for this.) You can create illustrations which are merely suggestive. If you want to show a man and a woman having sex, and emphasize her point of view, then consider how you want to make it seem interesting. What sort of drawing will make the scene appealing?
Above all else, make sure that the characters and their situation are interesting. If they aren't compelling and believable individuals, then the reader might not care about them, even when the characters are having sex. I've read a number of translated OJLVNs in which I liked the art and the adult content, but the characters were forgettable.
As far as I know, Fashioning Little Miss Lonesome will be the first translated adult otome game. There have been official and fan translations of otome games which are relatively worksafe. However, as of this writing, I do not think any adults-only GxB visual novel has a complete localization.

The following is in spoiler tags, since it might be more appropriate for a discussion in the adults-only section of this forum:YonYonYon wrote:Every Japanese 18+ otome I've played felt like it was made for straight dudes - forceful sex, CGs with full body naked MC on the foreground and a tiny bit of the fully clothed LI somewhere in the background.
I took a few minutes to look at adult otome game CGs on an NSFW website which I won't name. Some of the examples which I saw showed the female protagonist more than her love interest during sex scenes. However, I found more examples which showed the male love interest quite a bit. The one which surprised me was Vampire Sweetie by Sugar Beans. Even though I didn't especially like the art, I thought it was notable because two of its CGs showed the protagonist's point of view during sex.

That's an interesting realization you had there. And thinking about it, I can't imagine how one would draw an ero-scene with focus on the male love interest instead of the female character. My brain has been turned into mush by reading things aimed towards guys.
I've played an otome game where the main character and the love interest had sex during the route. (Heck, the guy even got the girl pregnant and that became a plot point.) But, it was off-screen sex.
Though I don't actually play otome games that much (only for the yuri routes), I feel like I would totally approve of ero-scenes in your otome game if you think you can write it in well.

If you want to know how to draw pornographic scenes aimed at a female gaze, I'd look to pornography aimed at a female audience. Or, the pornography series Straight Guy for the Gay Eye (I think that is what it is called). It is heterosexual sex but marketed to gay men (and probably also some women) who are more interested in looking at the dude than the lady.Shinoki wrote:That's an interesting realization you had there. I recently finished a script reviewing Kara no Shojo, and I spent 300 words ranting and raving about how the game created 18+ scenes that used proper consent, and the MC regularly checked in on his partner to make sure that she was still A-okay.YonYonYon wrote:Every Japanese 18+ otome I've played felt like it was made for straight dudes - forceful sex, CGs with full body naked MC on the foreground and a tiny bit of the fully clothed LI somewhere in the background.
It was a really sad moment when I realized that it's so unexpected to find an 18+ game that respected the female characters that, when I finally found one, I had to point it out and shower it in kudos and cheerios and brownie points.
