De La Mer is a visual novel retelling of the story of ‘The Little Mermaid’ -with a twist!

When a spoilt mermaid princess rescues a drowning prince he gives her a kiss of thanks, but also accidentally gives her the common cold. This is a fatal illness for mermaids, and so Lorelei has no other option but to seek out the sea witch and become human in order to survive. Once human she ends up working as a maid in the Royal Palace of a certain annoying prince... meeting many new people. When the time comes will she find a way to to return home to the sea? Or will love get in the way?

Follow Lorelei as she begins to adapt to life on land in the Demo. Four potential romances are available. With Demo 1.0 having over 60,000 words and the finished game an estimated final word count of over 150,000, De La Mer features an immersive world in which the story will adapt according to the choices you make. Focus on a breathtaking romance, unravel the Kingdom’s mysteries, or build friendships against a backdrop of both magic and intrigue.


CHARACTERS


Lorelei
Image

The one and only protagonist. Formerly a proud princess of the merfolk, Lorelei is experiencing serious culture shock. Without the suppport of family and friends from the sea, can she overcome the challenges of having to actually work for a living? To forge a future she will have to confront both her past as a mermaid, and her present as a human, for the two concepts are more linked than she realises.

Ayuna

Ayuna is almost always cheerful and exuberant, to an excessive extent. Dramatic outbursts aside, his life seems to revolve around his art, and he is always looking for new inspiration. But always on land. Paintings featuring countries across the ocean are conspicuously absent from his work. Why does he hate the sea - and mermaids in particular - so much? All Lorelei knows is that he will refuse to go near the coast, much less board a ship.

Faraday

Officially Faraday is both a prince, and a senior member of a diplomatic exchange from a neighbouring country. In reality he is little more than a glorified hostage after his father's Kingdom lost the way over a decade ago. His every move subject to scrutiny, Faraday keeps the world at bay with a sharp tongue. So it comes as a surprise that he has taken what seems to be a genuine liking to Lorelei. Unless the palace rumours are true and he really is a spy.

Regin

The original cause of Lorelei's predicament, Regin spends much of his time flirting. While he professes his desire to make the women he romances happy, he somehow fails to understand that he simply cannot achieve that for all of them. Which is just one of the reasons why he has a reputation as both a frivolous man and a heartbreaker. Is he helping Lorelei out of guilt or for some other purpose? What is really going on in his mind?

Tethys

Tethys is a knight, the Captain of the Royal Guard to be exact, and currently his job involves monitoring Lorelei, the stranger of unknown origin who suspiciously enough, managed to save the prince through unknown means. A job made more difficuly by his many, many admirers who follow him everywhere. However he has politely rejected all advances, with barely a change of expression. Often described as perfectly emotionless, is he actually as passive as he appears?

QUESTIONS

Any and all feedback or suggestions for improvement are very much appreciated - but in particular I would love to hear about...

Simulation aspect- is managing stats too easy/hard/just about right?

Events aspect - are you able to trigger events easily enough?

Character development - how is it?

Nice art and the story concept is interesting. I'll take a look at this when it is further developed.
