[SOLVED] Dialogue that differs from a menu choice

#1 Post by imagazzell »

EDIT: Just needed to read the manual better. Please excuse me.

Hi all,

How can I make the player character say something other than what was given as a menu choice (as though the menu choice is what they're actually thinking in their head, but when they open their mouth to speak, they ammend their thought to something else)?

Example...

NPC: Would you like some brussels sprouts?
(Option given: I'd rather jump off a cliff!)
Actual response: Thank you for the generous offer, but I just had a tonsillectomy and am supposed to refrain from eating solid foods for the next two days.

From what I've learned thus far (admittedly not much), the default behavior seems to have the player simply say what the option says verbatim. So how might this be done?

Thanks!

Not really. In the example in the documentation, "Drink coffee" is the text displayed as a choice. "I drink the coffee, and it's good to the last drop." is what's displayed if you choose "Drink coffee." https://www.renpy.org/dev-doc/html/menu ... game-menus

Oof. What a dunce I feel like. I was only going off of the quickstart section on menus, where the player's response isn't on the very next line after the option, and my brain didn't think to follow the jump to the label, where it would have been made clear to me the same thing that you linked to. I apologize for wasting anyone's time. I'd delete the OP if I could.
