Re: What do you think is the most overused archtype, but....
I don't think there are any 'overused' archetypes, they're archetypes for a reason. Poorly done archetypes? Those are plentiful. In design, they say the best designs go unnoticed, whereas poor design is the elephant in the room. So you never think of where archetypes are used successfully, but when ...

Re: Must a VN have music?
Music can quickly establish the mood of a scene even before the audience starts reading. That is if the audience really wants to get into it. But you can feel when the creator of a VN didn't want to put much effort into the music, or the selection was poor, and that's what makes me usually turn off ...

Re: Male characters other than protagonist [BxG]
I don't even think it has to be about rivalries. I think for a lot of storytelling, you might consider using what's called 'clone characters'. They're reflections/foils for the MC. So the story of the 3 Little Pigs vs Big Bad Wolf. The story is about the pig with the brick house, and we see contrast...

Re: Does Anybody Practice Drawing From Memory?
When I think of memory drawings it makes me think of figure drawing class, where we have any where from 30s to a minute to study a pose, and then draw it from memory. The older the memory the more likely you're just going to make it up--not that there's anything wrong with that. When you're learning...

Thought your name was just backward of "partaay'n".nyaatrap wrote:Not my case, but generally the concept of their first developing game gives a circle name.
My circle name - nyaatrap itself - is just a random modified letters from cthulhu mythos.

Re: WebStory Engine - A Visual Novel Engine for the Web
Sorry, apparently my language skills fail late at night. I meant that it's possible to arrange things in such a way that it would be comparable to the LiveComposite feature in RenPy. Using the image pack z-depth placed over the same x-y coordinates. Let's say one for facial expressions and another f...

Re: WebStory Engine - A Visual Novel Engine for the Web
Oh hey, I just realized you already have LiveComposite built into your engine. Sudden moment of clarity, when I realized why I didn't try means to conserve the number of assets necessary for my project. Then I realized that since it uses levels, and they're the equivalent of layers in Photoshop... I...

Re: WebStory Engine - A Visual Novel Engine for the Web
Thank you so much for this engine! It's exactly what I was looking for in what I wanted with an engine. Especially the distribution method and use of XML. I need to stop lurking around your forum and actually ask questions and join in the fray. But thank you again for making this, I very much apprec...

I don't really think of it as making everyone Bisexual. I think more appropriately characters are PC-sexual.

Re: game without backgrounds
If you're already working in watercolors, why not just do a few washes of various colors and use those for backgrounds?

Re: Revelations on Writing
My favorite creative writing tips from Kurt Vonnegut: Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water. Every sent...

Re: Sprite Recycling
I'm glad that this inspired some people! I think I've also picked my path with the input I've seen here. Thank you guys for your responses. I plan on turning it into an episodic sort of thing, with 'actors' as opposed to sprites. Thank you for mentioning the Osamu Tezuka's Star System, that's exactl...

Honestly, this sounds like a Choice of Game and easily done with their ChoiceScript.

Sprite Recycling
I don't think I see it happen very often when people reuse their sprites from one project to the next. I'm the artist behind my project, and I'm currently just building sprites while I reevaluate the story I want to write. And with all the time and effort that I was putting into them, I was wonderin...

Re: Why do characters in visual novels rarely change clothes
... what I did with Anton's Vacation (1280x960 res, three outfits, 15 emotions, 15 side images per character...)... I thought there was a way, like via liveComposite where you can super impose the outfit onto the base sprite? Or is that not correct? I was thinking of having multiple outfits for a c...
