Re: Post your workspace / room

My development corner.

I like to have things within arms reach so even though it might look messy it's an ordered mess.

Re: do we need a Ren'py maker with a user-friendly interface

As someone who has written a user-friendly tool I want to give my two cents. I think it's very easy for people to underestimate what an enormous task it is to create a creative tool that has visual and "hands-off"-development. The issue isn't that it is hard to make. It's just a huge amoun...

Re: new visual novel engine: bass novel

The games doesn't even work for me. What are they, HTML and Javascript?
I'm growing more and more concerned about the web as an application platform. It's like everything's built with matchsticks and sticky tape.

Serves them right for putting so many restrictions on their platform.

Re: RenPy 6.11.0: 'return' outside function [KIND OF FIXED]

In the programming world this is called a gotcha.

It's the biggest, most commonly occurring gotcha that I know of. Why people think it's a good idea (compared to other languages) is beyond me.

Re: Downloadable Games are Important

I love the ability to buy and play games on demand so I am no stranger to buying downloadable games. That said, I strongly believe that the subscription model of MMO's and things like Quake Live (i.e. what you call "streamable games") is going to go away. The reason in simply that a game i...

Re: Getting in the games industry

You don't have to make your own graphics engine but you're going to need to make something. You don't have to finish it. I have so many unfinished projects. The important thing is that you develop your skills as a programmer. The more you write C++, the more you will learn. Make mistakes and learn f...

Re: Getting in the games industry

Any point is positive, I suppose, and the more reasons the better if you're looking to get hired. But once you've gotten the job, then what? You still need to be able to perform and produce actual code that both you and your team is happy with. This requires experience I don't think Renpy gives you....

Re: Getting in the games industry

I disagree about Renpy being good practice for game development. * Python is SO not C++. They're different in practically every way. * Hence there's virtually nothing you can take from Python development and apply to Windows/Mac/Console development, besides basic OOP. * Game development can be categ...

Re: Getting in the games industry

I've only worked for small to mid-sized companies of around 15-20 people. In those types of companies you can always contribute to the game, whether it is direction or game design. If you have good ideas, there's a high probability your team will agree. The more you contribute, the more responsibili...

Re: Getting in the games industry

Sure. Again, I live in Sweden and the competition isn't as high here when it comes to talent. I've worked in Singapore too but I think the same applies there.
I can see schmoozing being a perfectly valid tactic in a larger country like USA.

Re: Getting in the games industry

I still don't think it's good advice to direct people towards QA as an entry point to the gaming industry.
The sure way to get a job is to develop a sought-after talent, whether that is programming or art or whatever.
